NYU Business Prof: Covid Has Begun a Long-Overdue Collapse of the American Education System, and They Deserve Everything They're Going to Get
Ace of Spades ^ | 6/5/2020 | Ace

Two videos of him, below, making the same basic points. He's on shows hosted by people you will not like (Amanapour, Cooper), but he's worth listening to.

His basic notion is this:

American education has long been absurdly overpriced. He notes this is the only industry in America which has yet to face significant pressures to cost-cut.

He says that parents are getting to see what their $76,000 per year is buying them-- because now they can see the witless profs lecturing to their kids on the Zoom sessions they have online.

And parents are thinking: "This is worthless. I am spending $300,000 for something absolutely worthless."

Not just worthless -- in addition to the debt, there are four years (at least) of lost wages and lost experience to consider.

He also notes that many students -- maybe the most in recent history -- will decide to skil college next year, because college might not even be all the way open. Many will take "a gap year."

This will cause many colleges to go bankrupt.

Check out the two videos even thought they are hosted by CNN hosts.

He predicts Armageddon is coming to 40% of US Colleges momentarily.

A whole bunch of professors may take a gap year as well. Students will be working to earn money for their schooling and professors will be working off their sentences for their ANTIFA activities this summer.

You’re a youngster. UCLA, when I went there was $210 a quarter and room and board was about the same.

I've long thought that computers and video tapes could replace most education professionals.

What computers don't do well at is behavior control and enforcement. Some students need someone watching them to make sure they do the work and don't get into trouble.

They also don't provide student interaction or discussion. So they don't build social skills the same way as a school does. Thought they can provide social skill training.

I hope he’s right but I’ve learned to be skeptical about doomsday predictions.

That professor put into words what has been driving me crazy for the last 12 years ( when my son started college). I saw the most radically liberal institution in the country, with their phony bleeting about caring about society and fairness and justice, rape their students with pauperizing tuitions.

In the meantime the MSM that was condemning capitalism in just about every other industry, was MIA on any meaningful examination of the obscene tuition inflation by their beloved College commrades.

The democrats will demand that the universities be bailed out. “Education is vital to the country.” Blah blah blah. Sad thing is that they’ll likely get a bailout for colleges.

Pose this scenario to you. ‘Johnny’ is a 3rd year student (having spent $75k at this point), and he has gone off from Missouri, to NY to riot there, and is arrested for assault and vandalism of property. NY cops get forced to release him.

Somewhere in November, Feds show up at ‘Johnnys’ college dorm, with both a search warrant and arrest warrant. Johnny crossed state borders, and there’s serious felony charges now existing. Johnny calls dad, and he gets a lawyer involved. Talks occur. Lawyer can get several charges dropped, admit to one single felony charge...if he points out the leadership of his Antifa group and agrees to provide testimony.

Johnny then does 3 months in a fed prison for the one charge. He goes back to college and wraps up his degree. Normally, he’d be able to ask $45k starting salary. But Johnny has a new problem...the HR person at this company asks if he’s ever been arrested. ‘Yes’ is the response, and the situation? Johnny admits it was a felony charge and 3 months of prison. HR smiles and says ‘no way on hiring you’.

Johnny discovers over the next six months that no significant company will hire him. The $100k of college debt is now a problem. The best that Johnny can do with his degree now is work as a car-rental clerk at the airport. He may be there an awful long time.

What did Johnny do wrong?

“What did Johnny do wrong?”

Obviously his first wrong was being born a white male. Too much privilege and all that. /sarcasm

Washington State is going to make it illegal to ask about felonies etc.

So he is going to get a job at pseudo govt agency - transit, human services org ... and he is going to get an awesome pension at 30 years. In addition he will get 5 weeks of vacation a year and 2 sabbatical years off

Meanwhile the engineering student has to work 40 years and will be responsible for his 401k retirement

Whos the fool

I attended Moorhead State College, now Minnesota State University Moorhead from 1967 to 1971. The out-of-state tuition for fall quarter 1967 for 16 credits was about $130.00. It is was less expensive for me to attend MSUM and pay out of state tuition, than to attend North Dakota State University (three blocks from my home) and pay in-state tuition.

Combined with video tapes of the best in class teachers, you can constantly refine to deliver excellent teaching to all.

I had a relative who was a teacher complain about how much athletes made compared to teachers. I told her that if you took the top 300 tachers in the country you could have three for each class and grade to teach at various speeds and levels. Put those on video so they teach every kid in the country. Those three hundred could then make NBA-level money. Every other teacher would then be like rec league players who would have to do it for fun. She did not like that at all.
