This has got to be one of the most dumbfounding [we're tempted to drop the "founding"] statements made by a member of the liberal media regarding the coronavirus.
On his MSNBC show this morning, Ali Velshi suggested that by deeming houses of worship "essential," thus qualifying them to reopen, President Trump could be in violation of the "separation of church and state."

Prohibiting worship meetings sure as heck DOES violate the free exercise clause!
Velshi: Trump Deeming Churches ‘Essential’ Could Violate ‘Separation of Church and State
There are literally not enough facepalms.
JC Rhenquest used to fume cuss words about church and state. He opined states are free to encourage or prefer a religeon, and they should. Being a Baptist myself, I love Jefferson to death, but his inartful words to the Connecticut Baptist have turned out to be one of the most bastardized constitutional concepts of our history.
The evil left has been given a huge victory of perception vs reality.
This is not a leftist government crackdown on religion. This is a church faced with a plague. The core issue is this: reopen churches, Christians will die by the thousands, tens of thousands, then hundreds of thousands.
The propaganda is all trying to get you to: angrily insist on your right to go to church, so you go there, get infected, and die.
It’s a psy-op to kill you. Are you going along with it, or resisting it?
Like a good marxist this dirtbag propagandist happily decrees churches unessential.
Hey dumbass I got your separation. Keep Government out of my religion. Learn it, love it.
From the picture, I’m guessing Veshi worships Buddha.
The Dem atheists and Satan worshippers do not really separate church and state, they try to demolish religion and its observance by believers.
I had several talks with a student assistant from China—she and her family are extremely observant and are at risk from the government all the time. Her descriptions sound a lot like the Dems plans for the USA. A lot.
As Kayleigh McEnany noted yesterday, it is amazing the level of vitriol and opposition to prevent churches from meeting for worship. It has the appearance of evil. Would there be this level of vitriol if Trump said that restaurants are essential and should be allowed to have inside dining.
“So why arent state decrees closing churches violations of Church and State? The First Amendment guarantees Freedom of Religion because the practice of religion IS essential.”
Exactly.
Sooooooo ,,, you lose.
Jesus as not a Republican. He was not a Democrat. Where in scripture is Jesus’s politics discussed?
Stop assigning human political values to Him.
And “they” didn’t kill Him. Our sins did.
i LOVE Muslims telling us Christians what to do!
yeah, it violates the constitution, but liberals like to say separation of church and state to push out christianity from the public square, which is the opposite of what the constitution says and meant. I simply means the government should not infringe on a churches right to assemble or anything like that.
LOL!
The irony here is that the primary function of the executive branch of the federal government is to defend the citizens AND their rights under the Constitution. This MSNBC fool has it exactly bass ackwards.
The first amendment....speech has been curtailed, assembly has been curtailed, religious observance has been curtailed....WHY is the eneMedia still operating?
Let’s begin by noting that, contrary to Velshi’s citation of the “separation of church and state,” that phrase is nowhere to be found in the First Amendment.
The author appears to be confused. The Separation Of Church and State is in a different part of the constitution. Its in Article 52.
Hes also got the wrong constitution.
Article 52
(1) Citizens of the USSR are guaranteed freedom of conscience, that is, the right to profess or not to profess any religion, and to conduct religious worship or atheistic propaganda. Incitement of hostility or hatred on religious grounds is prohibited.
(2) In the USSR, the church is separated from the state, and the school from the church.
