New England Journal of Medicine: “the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%)”
The New England Journal of Medicine recently reported the following:
“the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%)”
So then why is the mainstream media reporting much larger numbers?
Is the mainstream media trying to scare people in order to get bigger ad revenues?
Is the mainstream media scaring people in order to try to make Trump look bad?

More akin to the flu’s rate than a disease with an 8-10% killing rate. Not saying much. This headline is grossly misleading in truncating the full statement.
Still several times higher than the flu’s, however, and several times more infectious. With some other nasty traits like the long incubation time, potential for more severe relapse, likelihood of significant, permanent lung damage for survivors, lack of historical ability to develop an effective vaccine, etc.

I’m sorry, but when in our lifetimes have hospitals been crushed by a sudden influx of dying “regular flu” victims?
Any attempt to defend Trump from the unfair blame he’s bearing is totally undercut by his supporters clinging to claims of “hoax.”

the obvious conclusion is that we need to do a lockdown every year now, in order to deal with the flu

To those unfamiliar with the world of medicine the NEJM is the single most highly respected medical periodical in the world.

Can someone tell me what a FLUBRO is?
I see it referenced throughout FreeRepublic posts and am not clear to what it refers.

Still several times higher than the flus, however, and several times more infectious. And you don't have a big chunk of the population that's been vaccinated against Covid so you'll have more infections.

IMHO, what is going on is Trump is being told by his team of scientists that over 1 million could die, so he is quoting what they tell him. OTOH, The number could be as low as 40,000 or even lower by April 30. If Trump said the actual numbers expected, the MSN would pooh pooh him and say he doesn't listen to the "scientists". The "scientists" told Algore that we all all be drowning by 2010, or at least with wet feet by now. They are just making "models" and feeding it information and projecting it out. The truth is, the FACTS are always changing, daily. There will be more people taking the malaria meds sooner, the distancing will be in full swing mitigating the numbers of new cases, the weather will be warmer, more breathing machines will be available, and on and on.
If The numbers remain lower than say 40,000, then Trump looks like a hero. If the numbers reach 100k, he can say, I told you so. Even if the numbers reach 80k, he can say it was better than we said.
By saying the larger numbers, he is preparing the people for bad news. If he can deliver better news, he's a hero.
