His surname looks Croatian (there were many Croatian immigrants to that area of Minnesota, including Roger Maris' family).

Alaska Congressman Nick Begich (1932-1972) was born there--he was on the same plane as Hale Boggs, campaigning for re-election, when the plane vanished. His son Mark served one term as US Senator after narrowly defeating Ted Stevens after Stevens was found guilty just before the 2008 election (the verdict was later thrown out because of prosecutorial misconduct--without that pickup of a seat for the 'Rats Obama wouldn't have been able to get Obamacare through).
