The only authority the President has is that enumerated by the Constitution of the U.S. Unless it is a bona-fide, short-term national emergency, I see nothing in the Constitution that gives Trump power to interfere with buyers and sellers between the U.S. and China. This whole China-Is-The-Reason-For-Our-Economic-Woes thing has gone far enough.

Congress has granted the POTUS this power by Statute.

In place since 1977 to empower Jimmy Carter in dealings with OPEC.

Dumb bastards never repealed it.

He can PROSECUTE any company or individual who does business with any country he puts off limits.

And put them all in prison.

Or, shoot them if they resist arrest.

You totally miss the big picture. This is about the future, not the past.

That emergency power has been used by many Presidents, many times...including your friend and mine...BO.

China indeed manages its trade very carefully, of course for its own benefit. I appreciate Trump has pointed this out to Americans and has pushed business, particularly big business and high-tech, to begin to look (especially the USA!) elsewhere for manufacturing.

You will note also that in this particular area, the normally psychotic Left and Democrat party has said nothing against Trump. Chuck Schumer even publicly expresses agreement. It shows me that there is broad agreement on this.

But I agree with you - “outright blocking” is indeed US Government simply doing to Americans exactly what China does to its own citizens.

All that concerns me is someone like Harris saying the gun situation in our country is a national emergency and banning companies from doing business with countries that sell arms, or some such insanity.

Some powers should only be allowed for SANE presidents :)

The Constitution enumerates the power of Congress to regulate trade with foreign countries (Article 1, Section 8, clause 3)

Congress then, via the International Emergency Economic powers act (Title 50, §§1701–1707.), granted the office of the President the power to declare a threat to the US Economy.

This authority was used by President Jimmy Carter in response to the Iran Hostage Crisis, presidents have invoked IEEPA to safeguard U.S. national security interests by freezing or “blocking” assets of belligerent foreign governments, or certain foreign nationals abroad.

I think Congress passed a law to that effect a number of years ago. That would still be in effect.

I see nothing in the Constitution that gives Trump power to interfere with buyers and sellers between the U.S. and China.

Apparently, the congress passed a law back in the 1970's that gives the President the authority via the use of emergency powers. Since congress has control of commerce, I'd say a challenge to the law congress passed would pass constitutional scrutiny.

The Congress granted POTUS the power and never rescinded the Act...Trump isn’t going rogue and trampling the Constitution.
Don’t get yer panties wound too tight over the trade wars - Trump will win those too and you won’t be out in the street starving to death....he understands things much better than you as your post proves...he never blamed China for “all our economic woes”, he’s pulling a Walmart by saying that if you steal from us we will prosecute...and they been stealing....bigly.
To say we shouldn’t “prosecute” would make us like them judges that keep letting illegal thugs out to keep committing their crimes...

So you are saying that President Trump’s ability to impose ruinous tariffs on any goods improted into America leaves him powerless? I have some swampland in Florida that I want to sell you.
