A few scenes from our vacation at Weeki Wachee Springs on July 21. Among the activities were a riverboat ride down the Weeki Wachee River, watching the Little Mermaid show, and an incredibly refreshing swim in Weeki Wachee Springs at Buccaneer Bay for several hours. The water there is a constant 74 degrees year round and since the springs feeds 150 million gallons of water from deep underground, it is crystal clear and absolutely pure. Price of admission is only $13 for adults and $8 for children. Riverboat ride, mermaid shows, and use of the Buccaneer Bay water park are INCLUDED so no extra charge for those activities.
Hey PJ, there are some other springs you could check out, such as, Silver Springs in ocala, juniper sprins in the ocala national forest, and Alexander springs also in the forest. Rainbow spring in dunellon s also pretty nice.
I might go to Silver Springs next year but do they allow swimming?
They stay down a long time, at least compared to the air I can hold in my old lungs.
Thanks!
They can stay down for the better part of an hour...thanx to convenient tubes they can occasionally breath from.
BTW, the little girl was my niece and while we were at Weeki Wachee Springs, a mural of the Little Mermaid was being painted back home on her bedroom wall. Most of the way home, we were both in stitches laughing because I suggested that maybe the mural artist would sabotage the mural by doing weird stuff with the painting such as painting a big diaper on the mermaid tail. Kept me laughing all the way from Tampa to Naples. I guess you sort of had to be there to appreciate the mirth.
Silver is commercialized. Rainbow is much quieter as is juniper. Rainbow is in dunnelon, juniper and Alexander are in the ocala national forest.
Don’t know if swimming is permitted at silver
I remember a long time ago tubing down a crystal clear stream for miles somewhere north of Gainesville. Do you know about that?
We used to live in Pinellas County. Our friends invited us up there one weekend. Gorgeous crystal clear water. QUITE refreshing on a hot summer day. Coolest thing was manatees actually swimming along side us. My friend’s son blubbered when one rubbed along side him - their hide is coarse. Big Fat Water Cows. Anyway, we stopped at one bend where some yutz were jumping off Tarzan rope, so I went up and did that. After we left I realized my gold/silver Citizen watch was missing. I went back to that spot and sure enough, the water was SO clear, I was able to dive down and find the watch. Amazing.
Even in the winter if it is like 60 degrees that water must be refreshing because it stays a constant 74 degrees year round. So although it felt cool when I was there, it would be like a warm bath when the air temperature gets cold.
Rainbow river, manatee springs... very beautiful...the james river in the mountains of Virginia are also beautiful
Sounds like the itchetecna, the Santa Fa is carmel colored.
Rainbow is crystal clear and not that deep. On the rainbow you can rent tubes at the KP hole and float down, that’s a couple hours.
No gators?
I took the family to Weeki Watchee sometime around 2006 when I was suffering Disney World fatigue. It was an enjoyable head trip! It totally reminded me of ‘Lester’s Possum Park’ in the movie ‘A Goofy Movie’ but spiced up with strippers working a day job as mermaids. It was kitschy, interesting, threadbare, and cool.
Also CHEAP. It cost the five of us to get in about half what it would cost for one to get into Disney World.
We live in Sarasota...maybe I’ll go to one of these places!
Wakulla Springs is another good place to go. The last time I was there, several years ago, they allowed swimming and even had a high dive.
Probably talking of the Ichetucknee River.
Narrow spring fed great for an afternoon float trip on inner tubes.
No motor craft allowed.
