Californians Thrown Curve Ball On Eve Of New Ammo Control

With just over a week to go before a looming ammunition control law takes effect, California officials are backing a new requirement that could leave many unable to buy ammo.

Prop. 63, approved by voters in 2016 after an effort by now-Gov. Gavin Newsom, requires a background check be conducted on all sales of ammunition in the state. Set to go live on July 1, the California Department of Justice just over a week ago filed emergency regulations to require a federally compliant California driver license or ID card to legally buy ammo. The problem is, many in the state don’t currently have one of these “REAL ID” cards yet.

“Many Californians do not yet have the REAL ID, and because it’s not required for air travel until Oct. 1, 2020, they have not rushed to get this new license,” says pro-gun California Waterfowl in an alert. “While some have gotten it easily, many have had to wait a month or two for a DMV appointment to get this ID, so it’s unlikely every gun owner could get this ID in time for the July 1 start date of ammo background checks.”

Alternatively, residents who want to buy ammunition under the new requirements can use a passport or birth certificate to vouch for their status, but advocates point out that most people don’t carry such documentation with them on a trip to the local gun store to buy bullets.

“There is no justification for enacting this requirement this close to the implementation date of ammunition background checks, not when it would effectively treat tens of thousands of law-abiding Californians like criminals by preventing them from purchasing guns and ammunition,” said California Waterfowl.

Worse, on the same day the Prop. 63 rules become active, California’s ban on traditional hunting ammunition expands to all game during all seasons. This means that sportsmen who have legacy lead ammo and are looking to be compliant for the upcoming seasons could be refused such a purchase if they don’t have their papers in order.

Meanwhile, according to conservation statistics, in 1970, there were 763,671 hunting licenses sold in California, a figure that nosedived nearly 70 percent to 269,055 last year while the state’s overall population doubled in the same period.

Attorneys representing the California Rifle and Pistol Association and the National Rifle Association on Thursday submitted a letter to DOJ officials protesting the nature of the emergency regulations, arguing they conflict with federal and state law. The proposed emergency reg has an open public comment period that runs through June 21.

your observation is appreciated and understood. but just visit the dmv there and see....
and furthermore, fake docs are so widely available (and anyone with a computer can make up what’s needed in just a few minutes, for themselves)

its a giant sized joke...
lines that curl out the door and go down the block, 6 and 8 hour waits, each clerk demanding different things...nobody there to staighten anything out....etc.

and all for licenses that do NOT test driving skills (or even much driving law knowledge, since the little test questions are so patently...poorly phrased in so many cases, and deal with so many minor or trivial things like curb colors and shapes of signs without testing understanding of what they mean, etc).. a bad joke from A to Z, really.

you can see the results there on the road, too
cars cutting across 3 high speed traffic lanes, cars running stop signs and even red lights, drivers on crack, meth, or other drugs and lots of drunk drivers....swerving in and out of lanes, cutting off or shoving other cars into median barriers, its a sick zoo... 90 cars drive safely but at least 10 can kill you in a second... the dmv continues to line people up for 8 hours at a time in the hot sunshine to get licenses that test and prove nothing

The state won’t care if the system breaks. No approval? No sale.

Well, I’ve gotten an up vote and a down vote.

I had a neighbor complain that she had to jump through a surprising number of hoops to get a Real ID license conversion.

But, then, citizens now have to jump through hoops all of the time, while illegal aliens are pushed to the head of the line. Examples include: preference in housing, non-enforcement of driving violations, release from the judicial system, the ability to maintain multiple IDs for identity change if in trouble or to collect multiple EBTs.

It seems that if there’s anything that’s useful to a citizen, it becomes a right or necessity to be granted to illegals. That’s why I asked the question.

“I had a neighbor complain that she had to jump through a surprising number of hoops to get a Real ID license conversion.”

And also my late wife’s experience as a naturalized U. S. Citizen — took three tries although all documents were available and inerrant from the beginning. I still don’t believe any significant number of illegals have been able to acquire Real ID. The fed side of the system would catch a large percentage of counterfeit documents.

Here in WA, it is hard for me to imagine an illegal walking up to the DMV counter and asking for Real ID. Although they can get regular driver’s licenses, doing a Real ID application would be the same as stating they were illegal. Even if the state did nothing (which it wouldn’t), they would be paranoid the the fed would hand the data to immigration since the data is obviously going into the fed system.

Can Californians still make a trip to Yuma and other points East to load up and take home to their “friends” in the back alleys of LA and SF?

How AWFUL! According to our sicko liberal (redundant) California niece, citizens cannot possibly be expected to get an ID! It’s too hard! And not fair! That’s why an ID shouldn’t be required to vote!

I’m sure she is crying buckets over this new development!/s ((She’s probably celebrating that ammo will be difficult to purchase. She’s such a good little communist.))

California laws will have no effect on crime but will make control of the general population easier and that is the desired result of these laws. Californians need to wake up and realize the dangers of one party rule. If anyone needs an example of how power corrupts, they need only review the history of legislation in California and, to a lesser extent, New York since Democrats have been solidly in control.

Add in license plate readers at out of state gun shows and gun shops.

Trigger on them at the ag stops. Open your trunk, we need to check for peaches.
