Senate Republicans pushed back on President Donald Trump -- including the threat of a veto override -- after he scoffed at the possibility that members of his own party would try to block his plan to impose a tariff on Mexico over concerns about the potential economic fallout.
Senator Kevin Cramer, a North Dakota Republican, predicted that the Senate would have enough votes to override a presidential veto of any measure that would keep Trumps tariffs on Mexico from going into effect June 10.
Youve heard of people who are war weary, Cramer said. Senate Republicans are tariff weary.
Trump, speaking Tuesday at a news conference with U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May in London, said he didnt think his party would scuttle his plan to impose 5% tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico, unless that country takes unspecified steps to stop illegal migration from Central America.
I think if they do, its foolish, Trump said. Theres nothing more important than borders.
Few lawmakers say they would support Trumps tariff plan, which includes escalating the levies on Mexican goods every month until reaching 25% in October.

Any Republican Senator that votes to override the Trump veto is committing suicide.
Trump has 90% Republican voter support. The backlash would be swift and fierce and would destroy any Senator that doesn't get it right.
And that's why Trump is daring them. He's know they're bluffing.
Good luck at getting 67 votes, even with RINOs.
Finally the damned backstabbing RINOs might self- destruct!!!!! Yippee!!
“Stupid” is the perfect word!!
About as effective as gnats!

Senate Republicans Warn White House Against Mexico Tariffs
Thanks for writing what I was thinking.
RINOs trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
It is not up for a vote. They can OPINE but not override.
Damn never-Trumper panderers schilling for votes that don’t exist.
In the hundreds of postings here in Free Republic rarely is this brought up. Its Known As Reciprocity. We should be treating anybody illegally crossing the Mexican border into the US the way the Mexicans do;
Any American illegally .crossing into Mexico. Before being kicked out can get a heavy fine and possible imprisonment.
Its time we consider illegal entry by any person who is a non Mexican citizen illegally entering the United States through the US Mexican border a defacto Mexican citizen with limited Mexican constitutional rights subject to their laws while transiting. As well as any Mexican citizen entering illegally exempting those who do so legally.
According to the Mexican constitution Americans legally in Mexico get a 2nd class treatment. Besides being unable to vote one must also be a citizen to own land and Mexico is very restrictive about granting citizenship. Because of that a US citizen besides not being able to vote, and cannot have title in their name to any land property in Mexico. Its time the US should consider making that reciprocal.
Prohibit and fully legally enforce punishment to violators offering any illegal entrant employment, voting, and land ownership privileges .In other words the incentives to those thinking of sneaking into this country are removed and those that do better expect expulsion no job no voting no landowning ..
Back President Trumps effort to make certain the census form contains the citizenship question in it and no reference to race. But to the country of where the respondent is a citizen of if not an American citizen.
TIME TO END HYPHENATING AMERICANS
One thing the Mexican Constitution has that we should consider doing.Mexico has no hyphenated Mexicans. They prohibit any reference to race when they conduct a census or issue any means of identification, Where a photo id is not available physical description is needed skin color yes but not by race but by nationality..
By doing this Mexico has avoided balkanizing, creating fractional disputes in areas where a given group in one of its states is a majority or a minority. Plus it could play a significant part in shutting down the political playing off racial divisions between Americans by the Democrats.
I hope the party of stupid learned the lesson last time.
Pause.
This is stupid by the Senate. They should not say anything about the tariffs. They pulled the rug out from under Trump. The threat of tariffs is some of the leverage against Mexico that Trump has.
Paid Stooges of the US Chamber of Commerce.
“Good luck at getting 67 votes, even with RINOs.”
There are not 14 GOP Senators looking to retire.
Not RINOs per se, Chamber of Commerce bought and sold representatives.
This should be eye-opening but not shocking.
They are out in the open folks.
If the party fails to support Trump as they have in the past, if necessary I would have no issues supporting a 3rd party headed by D. C. outsiders. These idiots still have no idea if not for Trump their party would have been dead on the floor in 2016.
It is not up for a vote.
Why not? Theyre talking about passing legislation that restricts Trumps ability to impose tariffs on his own. They can pass that and override if he vetos it
The GOPe are owned by the Koch brothers and others who want and profit from open borders...
The Senate republicans do this and you will see a lot of new freshmen in the 2021 congress.....
Good luck at getting 67 votes, even with RINOs.
Not to mention the 75 or so GOP HOUSE members that would have to turn traitor, and they’re up for election every 2 years.
It
Simply
Will
Not
Happen
!!!
Why would GOP learn its lesson? GOP is open borders just like the Dems
Wake up people! Freepers wake up! If you think the GOP is on your side you are sheeple!!!!
Now Mexico thinks they can drag their feet because the message is: no consequences.
