I am thinking of traveling to Canada. I understand they can scan your computers and phones and our own Border guards can scan our stuff, too.
What have been your experiences? Canada says they can refuse you if you visit hate sites. I do not know if they consider Free Republic to be one, but I know FR was loosely involved in a Canada lawsuit with Mark Stein.
Thoughts?
They killed “FreeDominion”...............
I cross the border a couple times a year. I’ve never had to produce anything other than a passport and answer a few questions.
I’m sure they consider FR a hate site. There was a Canadian FR type site and I vaguely recall it getting shut down up there.
Dress in full muslim garb, complete with the patio umbrella fashion for the women and you’ll not only get a free pass, but directions to the nearest hand-out location.
When I travel internationally I do not take electronics.
I pick up a cheap phone with minutes on it and use hotel executive centers for computer
Then border guards can only scan me...
Let me amend that:
I have taken a “Clean Laptop” internationally.
Just a cheap Acer Asus that has nothing on it.
No personal or business files and I use VPN
This is nonsense. I live in Buffalo and we go into Canada all the time right across the Peace Bridge into Ft. Erie. Good Chinese food btw. All you need is a passport or enhanced Driver License.
All border services have the power to look at your personal belongings, electronics, etc...
I’ve had US Customs demand to have mine when ICE was doing an investigation of the company I worked for (and several in our industry). I don’t know about Canada, but in the USA, customs officials should have a warrant from a court to do a serious dive into your electronics’ contents.
Canadian Border guards are, in my experience, less intrusive and more “laid-back” than US CBP border guards. If you are an average American, with a reasonable reason to go into Canada, they won’t detain or question you.
Its not a crime to read Mark Steyn in Canada!
Question:
How are money transactions on credit cards handled? Canadian Dollars and US Dollars aren’t equal..................
Bring a Suicide Vest and a sword, tell them you are Muslim, probably get a Police Escort wherever you want to go.
The card company will bill you using the exchange rate for the date the charge was processed.
Crossing the border into Canada is not nearly as scary and intimidating as it is returning to the USA.
The Canadians are usually pretty low key and nice. The US Border Patrol is typically cold, insulting, intrusive, and they treat you like a criminal.
My advice? Don’t speak unless you are spoken to (and this goes double for passengers in your car!) and then just respond with a minimum of information and be on your way.
Saying too much is a flag and you’ll end up getting pulled aside for more screening and searches and then you might not get away from the border for as much as eight hours on a busy day.
Delete those Jordan Peterson videos.
Yes, I know all about that. Essentially killed by the legal system and an oppressive defamation law.
drove across the border this past weekend. into Canada Saturday, back into US Monday. she looked over my passport, asked a few questions and I was on my way. same thing coming back. neither took more than 2 minutes...
I live very close to Quebec and I go there a lot.
I also inhabit a number of web sites considerably more, shall we say, edgy, than FR.
Leave your guns home (do not even think about it for a second), and have a great time.
Your bank/credit card will make the conversion. You should ask your bank in advance what they charge on Canadian $$ purchases, because some banks will take the opportunity to charge you outrageous foreign currency exchange rates.

.
Your credit card will automatically make the exchange and you will be billed in US dollars. I always use a credit card which does not charge a fee for international transactions when I am abroad.
I go across the border a few times a month and have for years.... usually on business. Have had a few issues but for the most part, the border agents are fairly reasonable in both directions.
