Had an incident at the Bezos Market in NY today.
There was an empty line and I went to use it. A lady that was standing out in the walking AISLE (in the corner of the next line over) in the center of the market and standing BETWEEN the two lines hunched over her cart and talking on a cell phone facing towards the store and away from the checkouts. This lady is nowhere near the line.
I put my two things down at the checkout and I am checking out. Then about 20 seconds later the lady that was stading in the very RUDELY accuses me of cutting in line and I need to leave.
I was startled and naturally lifted my item up for a second, but then thought wait a second and told her, “You were not in line.” I put my items back down.
The lady got incensed and said that was some white privilege , privilege, privelgge, and then starting cursing at me. She called her boyfriend or whatever on the phone and then started telling him, “This #$%^#% cut me in line. There is some white privilege going on here. Get your ass over here now! I am pissed! Privilege.” I just ignored it but she was going on about my “privilege.”
So I told her you were in not in the line, you were over there in the corner, talking on your phone. Then she started talking to me more about privilege.
The boyfriend comes over as I am paying and tells me he was gone for only a “few minutes” to get some vitamins. He says “You cut in line, you should have asked” I told him I would have asked if there was anyone here but she over there in the corner, not in the line. So he tells me over and over that’s your privilege, that’s your privilege, she was in line, did you ask? Then I said again, “She wasn’t in line and started being rude to me.”
Then some other person who wasn’t even watching anything comes over and says she was in line! I told him, no she was not and was over there in the corner talking on the phone.
Then the boyfriend says, see we have a witness, we have a witness! Then he kept repeating that’s your privilege over and over. I just ignored it and got the change for my two items and left. As I am leaving he kept on repeating the that’s your privilege.
By the way, these were black people. So I am just wondering if anyone has a snappy response to that’s “your white privilege” other than ignoring it. These people ruined my Whole Foods visit and I did nothing wrong and would never cut anyone in line - these people are just rude and totally ignorant.
And hurry back with it please, I've got people to see and places to go.
