The New York billionaire seems unable to comfort the nation in times of tragedy or celebrate its moments of triumph.
It is a poignant paradox of Donald Trumps ubiquitous presidencyall tweets, all the timethat a leader who prides himself as omnipresent in digital public discourse is so often absent from national life in the hundred human ways in which the country has come to expect its presidents to perform.
Latest case in point: After Hurricane Michael devastated parts of Floridas Panhandle, Trump played host at the White House to Kanye West, whoin a ten-minute monologue in the Oval Officedropped the F-bomb and praised Trumps Make American Great Again cap as a hyper-masculine talisman that made him feel like a guy that could play catch with his son.
But think about it: Have we ever seen Trump play catch with his own 12-year-old son, Barron? Without question, the president dotes on his children, especially his daughter, Ivanka. But he's an absentee father to the nation, or at least a majority of the nation. There have been no warm and fuzzy photos of Trump shopping for books or gifts, as Barack Obama and Bill Clinton did with their daughters. No images of him poring over a photo album, as Abraham Lincoln famously did with his son Tad, or tending his stamp collection, as FDR did. No visible evidence of the easy relaxation with friends and family that has become a standard part of presidential iconography.
(snip) Trump cant readily cheer the nation in moments of triumph (championship sports teams boycott his White House). He doesnt tenderly comfort the nation in times of tragedy (he tosses paper towels to hurricane victims, and does a double fist pump on the anniversary of 9-11). He doesnt read books, talk movies or go to the theater, ...

They have no idea. Barrons classmates and their parents have been invited to the WH for events. I get so sick of reading the fiction from the media.I had a hard working father too and loved him dearly. Luckily I had a loving mother too. But now that the village raises families, Everything is destroyed in the family.
Like a lot of the photo ops where cancelled too by the other leaning “Lib” oriented groups in the first place, so event if Trump had wanted to do those things, it was the others who were poop pooping on the opportunity to make it happen, to make him look bad!!
I get tired of these “media” maggots who believe that, every time there is a hurricane, politicians should be holding onto some cable news media reporter’s kneecaps and flapping in the wind during the explanation of what the hurricane looks and sounds like. “Looks like a war zone, sounds like a train.” Yeah. We know.
So, the liberals are pissed at all he is doing but this one idiot claims h is absentee.
To be a liberal is to be mentally ill and stupid.
Latest case in point: After Hurricane Michael devastated parts of Floridas Panhandle...
Personally I never seen the need for the President to stop all business and go to the scene of every national disaster.
As tragic as the hurricane was to those that endured it, the President has departments that are set up just for these types of emergencies.
But like a lot of things with the left, the thing they are complaining about is not the thing they are worried about.
Two black men in the oval office talking to the President and offering possible solutions to problems that concern the black communities. They talked to a man that appeared to be willing to listen and more importantly act.
The fact that this President is a Republican is what has the left upset (and note just how fast the left used raciest terms against these two men).
The idea that blacks may have the blinders removed from their eyes and be exposed which party is really the party of racist (hint - Democrats founders of the KKK and supporters of genocide in black communities by why of abortions)is what they are really afraid of.
What complete dribble! Trump has done more for the country in two years than Obama did in eight years.
They are really reaching. Have we ever seen Purdum playing catch with his children? Thought not.
More empty shells being loaded up....Trump is the most present and hard working President we’ve ever had...ever.
What a Snowflake this author is. We didnt need a warm, fuzzy president who was going to be our buddy. We needed someone in the Oval Office who was going to start cleaning up the mess left by his predecessors, and thats exactly who we got in Donald Trump. Thank God for him. Im beginning to think all these diatribes against the president, and us as an extension, are venting exercises by media people as part of their TDS treatment prescribed by their shrinks!
Instead of doing phony photo ops he’s setting a personal example of work ethic and fortitude that most people could do worse than emulate.
If the closed illiberal minds that declared Trump “literally hitler” without ever hearing him speak, and deliberately blind themselves to his humor, and parse every word he says in the worst possible way, can’t see this president as a father figure, it’s their own choice.
How quaint. From The Atlantic. Wasn’t their main conceit as the in flight magazine of Air Force One?
I remember that from the wonderful movie, Shattered Glass about one of their intrepid reporters writing fake news and getting busted for it and they cannot even blame Trump for it that time.
Great movie although it tries to make it looks like the Atlantic is a paragon of integrity except they only came clean when another magazine was going to break the story.
For heaven’s sake. He did what he’s supposed to do. He has a team in place that is doing things as quickly as possible, considering the total devastation. If he were there so early they’d be complaining that his visit was hindering recovery.
Truth be told, they are shielding Baron from the vitriol the press want to pour on him at every turn.
Todd penned this gem -
John McCain and the Lost Art of Decency
In decades of covering politics, Ive encountered no one else with McCains unflinching combination of bracing candor, impossibly high standards, and rueful self-recrimination.

Purdum must have lost his teddy bear and binky.
Welcome to Trump's America, snowflakes.
Obama, the all powerful sovereign:

This is really stretching it. BS.
--exactly what I have thought for years--about the last thing a "disaster" needs is the president and his retinue' adding to the disorder-
-the time for the president (if there is "time" at all) is weeks afterward , probably presiding over a White House tribute to rescue efforts--
