Give me several million hunters with the equivalent of sniper rifles (typical deer rifles) who know the terrain and have the support of the local people any day over a trained military. Time is on the side of the hunter who would be defending their own home territory.
Perhaps in the WWII era.
the military will fight with precision bombs and drones just like in the Middle East.
You are a USMC captain. Your battalion has deployed to Fort Meade because of a vague "terrorist threat", your mission is to protect the capital.
At 2 am you gat a call from your major that the White House is under attack by terrorists (almost true), that the President and Vice President are missing (true), that terrorists dressed as US forces are moving through Arlington VA (false).
You are ordered to deploy your rifle company to M and 34th in Georgetown and kill anything that moves on the Key Bridge, which intel says is the route hostile forces plan to use to enter the capital.
The internet is down. TV and radio stations are off the air.
Is there ANY chance you will not move out and start shooting at the troops from Fort McNair trying to cross the Key Bridge and rescue the President?
“the military will fight with precision bombs and drones just like in the Middle East”
And the democrats won’t like that at all.

You have a great point. The problem the military will have is who is going to replace all of that expensive ‘smart’ ordinance when it used up?
The people you’ve been bombing?
Russia, China? Do that and the war will be over as ‘both’ sides unite to destroy the politicians. At least that’s what I am thinking right now.
In a general civil war the standing army isn’t even going to be an after thought or even a footnote. It’s to small, the country too vast to have any meaningful impact on the outcome.
