We can all agree that AR’s are not only reliable but are great at short ranges from 0 to 300 yards.
But what if you want to reach out further to 400 yard or 1000 yards? For the larger cartridge would the AR be able to deliver the same punch as its cousin the .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor?
Before making the decision to go with an AR10 or AR15, lets take a look at the comparisons.
AR-10
The AR10 rifle is an air-cooled lightweight rifle that is gas operated and comes with the 7.62mm (.308) barrel.
uses the standardized 7.62x51mm loads and has a standard 20-round detachable magazine box.
It weighs between 3.29kgs and 4.05kgs, without the magazine and ammo. The super-lightweight feature was as a result of the use of aluminum alloy.
The metal parts were save for the steel bolt, barrel and bolt carrier group.
AR-15
This rifle employs the same "direct gas impingement" as the one used on AR10s.
Which results in 800 rounds per minute from this gun, with a muzzle velocity of 3200 FPS or 975 m/s being realized to a maximum effective range of about 600 yards.
Interchangeable Parts
For those using both AR’s, here are some parts that are commonly interchangeable between the two:
Buttstock Assembly The buffer tubes of AR-15 and AR-10 are usually the same in diameter. Having a quality buttstock allows comfort and can improve your shooting.
Trigger Group
Even with though the lowers on both AR’s are different sizes, the triggers are still interchangeable.
The mechanism on both are the same.
Who's the Winner?
This is a question that is nearly impossible and hard to answer.
The reason is that these are both quality rifles that gives the users many advantages when using the AR platform.
So determining which one is the clear winner would definitely have to factor in how good the user is. Read the rest of this AR-10 vs AR-15 story here.
AR-15s are being used out to 800m in matches, using 69, 77 and 80gr loads. Don’t need a .308 for 400-600m.

Quit misstating that statistic. You couldn’t pull the trigger fast enough to fire that many rounds in 1 minute nor could you change magazines fast enough to do so. That stat. is a measure on the time it takes for the action to cycle. 800 is way too fast and would lead to multiple failure to feeds/jams. Action speeds below 600 are preferred. Magazine springs can only feed rounds upward into the action so fast. At 800 the springs can’t keep up.....
The “wait” for my can took @ 8 months. With the appropriate adaptor, you can use your can with both guns.
I would like to see a comparison between the AR-10 and the HK-91

First line stopped me. The ArmaLite 15 ( assuming 223/556) is good to 300 or so?
Hmm. Just the other day at a maor High Power rifle match at 600, the top three were: 200-19x, 20018x, and 200-16x.
The first two were shooting optic equipped match rifles in 6 or 6.5 calibers the #3 guy was using an AR-15 A5 service rifle, with a 1-4x optic, in 223 Wylde, 80 grain bullets.
The X ring at 600 is just over 6” ( 2 MOA) and he kept 16 of 20 in that circle, shooting prone, unsupported with a sling.
Tell me again how far the 15 is good for? An 80 at 2750 retains about 1700 fps at 600, for about 500 ft-lbs, the wounding KE value the Army stands by is 300 ft lbs, So the latest AR15 used in matches can indeed be useful to at least 600 yards, not bad for a 22 huh?
Now, all that said, I would prefer the US military step up to a 6mm/6.8 wildcat and run 105s at 2800 from 18inch SPR barrels- that would improve everything- about to 762x51 level and gaining as range increased (over M80).
Oh, and by the way, some long range competitors use the same rifle with 90 grain bullets ( and 6.5 inch twists) to 1000 and do quite well compared to the rest of the field.
My thought exactly. 800 rounds a minute is 13+ each and every second. Even with 30 round magazines, it would take much more than a minute duration to load 800 rounds. Having a drum raises issues of overheating if it was possible to press the trigger that fast for a complete minute.
That alone makes me question what else in this article is wrong. Personally, I’ve had several of both caliber, until my surprise boat sinking, and distance is the primary factor for me.
My deer rifle for years was the 6.5x47 Lapua. So my choice for my first AR-15 was 6.5 Grendel. I shoot the same bullets with some reduction in velocity, which is still more than adequate for deer & hog.
I am just finishing up my 2nd AR-15. This one is a wildcat, the 358Yeti. It is based on the .308 Win case shortened and expanded to 358.
It will launch 180gr bullets at 2,600 fps and 200gr at 2,400fps.

1. I was talking about a SHTF event, in which walking into your local sporting goods store would be just about your only option (and at that, not for long).
2. I know all about the better prices online. 2 disadvantages to that are: a) Now “they” know what you bought, and when; and b) you aren’t supporting your local gun shop (not your Academy’s and such), where lots of gunsmithing is done. Many have closed over the years, victims of e-commerce and big box stores, just like many other mom & pop stores. There’s a certain value to having many small gun shops vs. just a few big places.
I reload for all my rifles, and my son reloads for the pistols with his Dillon.
What ammo I purchase is usually in case lots.
Don't worry about me when SHTF.
That is an interesting round, I need to look into it.
In a real SHTF event, at least in my mind, local stores aren’t going to be an option.

Why only two? And this limitation of basically two calibers?
Many different rounds have been specifically designed to take advantage of the AR15, From the .204 Ruger to the .500 Bushmaster. I’m enjoying the 6.5 Grendel and the .458 SOCOM greatly.
Then the AR 10 shines with either the .260 Remington or the 6.5 Creedmore in addition to the NATO round.
What’s not to like?
