Hog Hunting with a .50 Cal
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 5/7/2018 | J Hines

Ever wondered what it would be like to go hog hunting with a Barrett .50-caliber rifle? This guy in Texas actually did.
If you thought hog hunting with elephant guns was impressive, check out these guys in Texas (Youtube dbtexhunts1) who decided to bring this up a notch and go hog hunting with a Barrett .50 cal rifle.

In a battle between a 100-150 pound hog and a .50 cal bullet with about 14,000 foot pounds of energy, the hog is going down every time.

I don’t think debating if this is ethical hunting or not.
Ask any ranchers or farmers that have these feral hogs running wild and tearing up their plantations. They’ll tell you this is one of the option to control that.

Unfortunately, shooting a hog with a Barrett .50 cal probably destroy a lot of meat, which is one of the tasty side benefits to shooting a hog this size.
Guess you can use a less caliber rifle, if you’re concern of less meat.
However, one thing is certain: it sure looks like loads of fun! See the full video footage of Hog hunt with 50 cal here.

And the hog was still twitching after being hit by a .50 cal. Definitely need to go big when hunting those things.

I would think hunting with a .50 cal would be more ethical since the ratio of kill shots would be higher. Having a wounded animal disappear into the woods, only to die and become a maggot farm is less so.

J. Hines of the AM Shooting Journal.

This is the work of a professional writer?!

Just my opinion, but this seems like the writing of a person that does most of their writing using just their thumbs.

Proof reading is a must if you are going to put your writing in public.

How stupid. A .45-70 would do great and not tear them up.

...debating if this is ethical hunting or not.

It's feral hog eradication, fer cryin' out loud!

I don't care if one has a weapon that inserts sarin gas up their rectums...I want them dead, dead, dead.

These nasty little b%$tards have cost me a lot of money in having to repair what they can destroy in just minutes of their damned rooting, wallowing and all the peeing and pooping.

In fact, I advocate nuking them from orbit!

I found this one channel with a Japanese hog hunter in Japan. He has dogs that root out the hogs, the hogs chase them back to the hunter, and then BLAM, he shoots them dead:

I've gone to 'AM Shooting Journal' and looked up their staff. Jon Hines claims to be retired Air Force and his job is listed as Traffic Director, directing traffic to the blog.

Literally, a blogpimp.

OK. One shot will put the hog - if it hits. What is the reload time for the typical 50 calibre rifle? I don’t think most allow clips.

Retired Air Force?

I am guessing that his MOS did not involve writing to any degree.

Like I said, if your writing for public consumption, proof reading is a must.

As long as it takes to work the bolt action and reposition the gun. The ones I've been around use detachable magazines.

What no one seems to have noticed is that the moron who shot the hog with the .50 let all of the other hogs escape. What I see is a hog trap that has been carefully baited to attract hogs and probably should have a radio control gate to get rid of the whole herd. It probably took a week or two to get the hogs trusting enough to enter the trap, and with one shot all of that work is down the drain. Those hogs won’t be going back into that trap. Would have been better to have dropped the gate and then shot them.

Fun Fact:

USAF doesn’t have MOS. They’re called AFSC (Air Force Specialty Code).
