AI will make advances, but were are very, very far away from artificial general intelligence. AI is still just a tool, nothing more.
Certain areas of study can grow even faster once start-step hurdles are overcome. Consider how fast aerospace advanced once the Wright brothers had perfected the basic operation of the wing.
Same is true with AI - it's being driven by the twin channels of genetic research and computing power. The entirety of our perception of reality aka consciousness is housed in the front section of our brains weighing maybe 2 lbs. Just a big bundle of nerves washed in a chemical bath. Perhaps only a few key gene expressions make the whole matter operate.
Then consider quantum computing, where we move from binary operations to perhaps infinite micro-states that mimic brain operations. Combine what is to be discovered about memory implant and resource processing, and who will be able to tell between organic & non-organic intelligence?

You are so right. Most people do not know and do not care as long as their phone let's them order a pizza just by talking to it. AI discussions do not appear on the morning shows (probably too advanced for their audience), is only briefly mentioned in the news ( occasionally ), and certainly does not top water cooler conversations unless you work in the industry. To those that say don't worry for the next x years... You should start worrying about x+1. It is not a question of if... It is a question of when. A decade or two will make no difference.
So, given virtual intelligent agents control of nano particle tools aka "weapons, and we can now clearly imagine how 5th gen battlefields are going to evolve.
(Also space travel. It's ridiculous to consider the future of exploration is a massive energy hog transporting physic organic matter ie human beings. Much more logical to launch receiving stations/tools, then simply transmit AI electronically at the speed of light. Once there, it can operate equipment via the same types of wireless protocols.)
That's a really good point, and brings up an interesting philosophical question: what if timing does make a difference? That is, what happens if technology advances too far beyond society's ability to politically organize & function in a peaceful manner? For example, what would have happened if Nazi Germany developed the A-bomb 5 years before the USA? In this case, humanity lucked out since a 1/2 decade made a huge difference in the course of future human events.
Which then brings up the issue we touched on before: what happens if an adversary beats us to the punch? Consider Rome: what if they hadn't rested on their laurels and indulged in sensual delights, but rather maintained their technical advantage and developed firearms circa AD300? (And steam engines AD600, and so on.)
This, to me, suggests the real danger is the West's matriarchal fascination with libprog priorities on social justice and other soft, emotional projects. Like (west) Rome eventually falling to the Germans, maybe the next winner is the one that continues to concentrate all political, economic and technical capital on emerging threat(s) just around the corner.
While debates about such nonsense as gender fluidity plays out in the public square, perhaps the unseen knock-out blow comes from a traditional, patrimonial society that never relaxes their guard.
