Shotshow 2018 has just passed and there were some really good looking subcompact guns that will be a big hit for the female CCW.
There were three handguns that stood out at Shotshow 2018 for women and they are:
I just picked up a .380 Ruger that fits in the palm of my hand and comes with a pocket holster.
Ran about 325 with couple boxes of ammo.
Also have a hammerless Ruger LCP 5 shot revolver, compact and easy carry in pocket or ‘body strap’ holster, fits comfortably UNDER my ‘manboob..ha ha’ also light weight and not bulky at all.
Both excellent conceal carry with little or no signature, especially with the pocket holsters MADE for the job.

Sorry, make that an
LCR 38 SPL +P
Why do you favor the revolvers? My kid will be 18 soon, and off to post high school education.
She’s got her head screwed on right, and knows that when seconds count, the police are minutes away.
I get the thing about jamming, but I need a little convincing I guess. I think you may be right.
Gads - I’m on the fence. Please push me over.
I don't think there is any "best" defense gun. I like my Beretta 92 at home, and carry my 686+ to church. But if I'm going for a walk in the Arizona desert, or a trip to the local hardware store, the LCP wins.
"Wallet, keys, LCP...ready to leave the house!"
A important component with females and hand guns is the ability (strength) to operate it quickly, such as ratcheting the first round into the barrel, clearing a jam, etc. These are nonissues with revolvers. Yes, reloading the revolver is a problem, but in all reality, if you need more than 6-7 rounds, you are in serious trouble anyway. I use the S&W 8-round 357 Mag revolver. Small, compact and easy to operate and fire. But I am male, and can quickly muscle autos as well. The point is to protect yourself and get to a safe place, where possible, and not get into an extended fire fight.
Well, that pushed me over. Biggest form factor issue here is that she has the hands of a child. Very, very small hands.
Copy that on reload. I trained her myself on the use of pepper spray (USCG course) and the ‘20 foot rule’, so now the issue will end up being ‘shoot/don’t shoot’ versus ‘minimum force necessary to effect escape’.
For her size, it may be that she’ll only get five rounds in a revolver. However, the semi’s she’d be considering are essentially 5 + 1 sized anyway.
If its smaller, and fool proof in a jam, then that’s the way to go. She can always suit herself down the line and get something bigger.
If there is, then you are in exceptionally serious trouble indeed.
there may be more perps to neutralize than 6
...
How often does that happen?
Mrs. L is quite partial to her Springfield XDS in .45. With the extended mag its 7 rounds. Nice little gun.

Semi autos for most women is a non starter
If they are that adept then they can shoot nearly same rounds as most men do
My women have revolvers
Because they need it simple and reliable
In a pinch
Then you better hope a hard leg is around very well armed
Average westerner is attached by six armed intruders
They are going to likely get killed
My wife shoots one all the time. Competently and accurately.
As does mine. If she could conceal it shed carry the 4 inch 629 we have in the safe. Her preferred load for that is a 210 grain JHP over 8.5 grains of Bullseye.
Best,
L
The gun should in basic black that fires pink bullets....
My wife shoots a plastic .45, however she does like my full size 1911 and wants me to finally build one for her. Neither of us like the stubby 1911s, however, those are not the only choices for lightweight, concealable .45s.
I did not intimate that a small .45 is a good choice for a new shooter. The part about women depends on the woman. I know many who work hard and have plenty of grip strength and the ability to shoot the .45 competently.
Heck, I’m only 5’5” and have small hands. I’ve shot pretty much everything. I prefer N-frames and large cal Ruger Redhawks and Blackhawks, 1911s (single stacks original). It all depends on how motivated one is to learn to shoot the larger heavy recoil firearms. My wife has shot lots of .454 Casull and .480 Ruger.
Yeah, the gals are often underestimated, which often works to their advantage.
more now than ever.
i was talking 6 unarmed attackers, but anyone will be hard pressed to defend against 6 heavily armed attackers...
the point is, be armed with whatever you feel comfortable with... don’t not carry because it is a semi over a revolver and vis versa.
which often works to their advantage.
Indeed.

I met an “old hippy chick” as she described herself in a local gun shop a few years ago. She was getting her .380 tuned up. After chatting with her awhile she said that the .380 was her back up to her back up. She carried 2 m1911s, one in IWB, the other in her purse and the .380 on her ankle. I’m thinking that anyone messing with her was not going to have a good day.
It never ceases to amaze me at the wide range of people you run into. Most bring a smile but a few are scary.
Some in this discussion refer to a women's self defense firearm as a get off me gun, and you're talking about it as a decocker. If a woman can aim, they're the same thing.
