Houston Democrat Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is a terror. Everyone in Houston knows it. Everyone in Washington, DC knows it. Over the last 22 years, since she was first elected to represent Houston in the district seat once held by Barbara Jordan, Cong. Lee has become a legend for her bizarre and abusive behavior.
One of Lees most famous eccentricities comes every year on the day of the presidential State of the Union message, which is held in the House Chamber before a joint session of congress. This is the one session of congress at which there is no reserved seating (and we all now know that reserved seating is a very big issue in Ms. Lees weird life), except for congressional leadership, and special guests like the members of the U.S. Supreme Court and Joint Chiefs of Staff. Members not in leadership a position that Cong. Lee is highly unlikely to ever attain due to her abusive behavior just take seats wherever they can find them.
But the Congresswoman, obsessed with getting seen on television, has a plan for those days. Very early on that particular special day each year, she comes into the House chamber and takes a seat on the aisle where the President enters the chamber. And she sits in that seat all day long forcing a staffer to hold it for her during potty breaks and to bring her meals when shes hungry so that, when the President comes down that aisle, she can be seen grasping and clawing her way to a handshake or even a hug. This routine she has kept, year-in and year-out, for 22 years, come hell or high water.
