How crazy would I need to be to move to Detroit?

Posted on 07/29/2017 10:37:51 AM PDT by HiTech RedNeck

Back in job market again after end of my current contract. I updated my listings (as a UNIX/LINUX C and C++ expert) on Dice and Monster the other day, and the phone began ringing off the hook.

Well, one recruiter wants to know if I am interested in full time work, direct hire, in Detroit, for the process control of a steel mill whose business is reportedly burgeoning.

This looks like a MAGA move to me, and the recruiter points out that it isn't all decay, there is rebuilding going on too.

My rhetorical question: how crazy does a high tech red neck have to be to make such a move? It can't be all bad -- this is Kid Rock territory after all.

To slum in order to MAGA or not to slum, that is the question.

And dude, I’m living in Omaha which is further south and boasting almost the same “average humidity.” Have you ever heard of heat and chill indexes?

And there isn’t even a large body of water anywhere close to blame it on, for Omaha.

Some people just whine.

I spoke objectively. Detroit IS in the Snowbelt, it IS in the Great Lakes region, it IS cold in the winter, it IS humid all year wrong. Those are all 100% OBJECTIVE KNOWN FACTS. I didn’t prejudge anybody. Only judgement I passed was on the person that called me a liar, she is the liar and beneath my contempt.

The notable thing about this creation called Earth is that it’s the punishment land. It’s where we landed after getting kicked out of Eden. Subsequently there’s things like parasites and crappy weather.

"This is the kind of stuff that makes me crazy on these threads. Businesses are moving to Detroit by the score. SO now I have to post more links in my continuing education campaign against the ignorance about my hometown city."

Private post coming to the both of you, I can't handle the Detroit bashing anymore. But I will say this. It was about 3 or 4 weeks ago sitting across the a table with a player in high tech business and he said to me "business is booming"

The Trumpian Rust Belt Rebellion has begun. I shutter to think how hot the economy will get in PA, MI, OH, & WI, you know where people really make stuff ( and other states too ) once Obamacare is nixed and a Tax Plan is passed.....

Know all about heat and chill indexes. I think they’re kind of silly actually. Especially when they decide that with the windchill it’s below freezing, but water ain’t freezing, because it ain’t below freezing. Nebraska gets its humidity the old fashioned way: rain. That’s the farm belt for you.

If you told the objective truth you would say it’s “too cold” for you, it’s “too humid” for you.

But it isn’t for MarMema.

Good, you exercised your freedom to move to your mecca of snobbishness and advanced age. Some choose southern Florida for that purpose, which would probably make Detroit seem dry, so what does that prove about humanity in general?

You could live in Wyandotte!! Drooling on the keyboard.

One of the coolest architectural gems of an Ice Skating rink in that city I have ever seen. I am not sure of the beams of laminated wood are fake or the real deal, but they are stunning....

So good. Why did you try to cheat your punishment, then? That just means God will have to kick your rear some other way to make up for it, right?

You’re getting silly.

No. It IS objectively cold in Detroit. They get 42 inches of snow a year. That puts them objectively in the Snowbelt. And if it’s regularly cold enough for 42 inches of solid water to fall from the sky then it is objectively cold. And the average humidity of Miami is only 2 points higher than Detroit, which makes it objectively humid. Once again OBJECTIVE FACTS.

Once again you talk about snobbishness that isn’t there. You’re inserting things into my post from YOUR brain then blaming me for them. If you don’t want snobbishness then stop inserting it.

Because we’re humans, we invent things like central air and bug spray.

All the silly here is coming from you. Tons of baseless accusations. Funny the person who just accused me of prejudging is prejudging.

The TEMPS are higher in Miami. This is why plastic mildews in Miami (even in Deerfield Beach where I visited an uncle and aunt).

You’re getting pretty silly, Stew. Cooler temps will push up the relative humidity when the absolute humidity is the same. There will be less absolute humidity in the air in Detroit than in Omaha, in fact.

Go study atmospheric thermodynamics some day.

I’m not bullying anybody. You accuse me of everything under the sun (including now being a bully) and I’m defending myself. If there’s a bully in this thread it’s you. You’re the one with all the wild accusations, all the personal attacks, all the devaluing of people.

Take it up with these guys:

They concur: Cold and Humid.

What? Swamp coolers don’t work very well in Detroit?

Who expected them to? But they do work wonderfully in Albuquerque.

Having to heat your home most of the time is going to drive down the relative humidity. Who lives out in the open at the airport anyhow? OK, if you’re Daniel Boone, Michigan is going to be a bigger challenge than Kentucky. But again, Indians managed to figure it out well enough that they didn’t evacuate Michigan for Kentucky.

Compared to what... Mars? Venus? Australia?

The only absolute cold is absolute zero. Humidity is relative. What about relative humidity don’t you understand, you silly bully Stew?

And funny how cool seems to be a hot property, at least if you are a global warmist, which I am sure you aren’t, but it just goes to illustrate the principle. Please don’t heat this globe up on us! We’d have to head poleward to survive!
