These hot dog stands and restaurants turn out some amazing tube steaks
The hot dog is one of those foods thats nearly impossible to mess up. You heat it through, plop it on a bun, squirt on some mustard, and call it lunch. But theres a big difference between not screwing something up and turning it into a paradigm-shifting, transcendental dining experience. And there are lots of hot dog stands and restaurants out there that are turning the humble hot dog into a work of art.

It’s got to start with a good dog, the rest is window dressing.
Unless you haven't eaten in a week, that is.
Ripped.........w/ Rut's Hut secret sauce.
My fav is Gold Coast at Ohare, terminal 3 “L” concourse, Chicago style jumbo char dog.
Also, there is a sign there advising that it is against city ordinance to apply ketchup to a hotdog within the Chicago city limits...
Whatever tastes most like bacon, is the best.
Rutt’s Hut. Great hot dogs. If you are from the Newark area you must remember the original Jimmy Buffs. But they are not the same since the gubmint told them they had to change the cooking oil at least once a year.
That looks like overkill to me. Just my opinion, but a really good hot dog shouldn’t require any dressing at all. And there should be enough fat to moisturize it.
I’ve eaten my share of hot dogs. Hot Dog Johnny’s in Buttzville NJ made some great dogs. They deep fried theirs. The other one I have eaten since I could chew was Nathans. For me it as simplicity; 2 dogs, with mustard and sauerkraut. You bit into it and there was a snap sound.
I spent most of my youth at Brighton Beach and I loved to take that walk on the boardwalk with my dad and go to Nathans for dogs, fries and a coke. Sometimes we would get clams on the half shell and put away dozens. Every time I fly into Newark, once I have my rental car, it’s off to Coney Island.
Looks to me like Chicagoans like to have a meal-in-one on a roll.
Every food group is represented.
That’s the one. There is no other.

We now live in Belvidere about 3 miles from Hot Dog Johnny’s.
Back when I was in college (many long years ago), I worked part time at the Pla-More Lanes in La Crosse. They steamed hot dogs in beer. The last one in the steamer when my shift ended at about midnight was the best!

Mel’s Hot Dogs, Tampa, Florida. Though I don’t think they steam theirs in beer. But they use Vienna beef.

Personally, I go for the Costco Polish sausage and pop for $1.50CDN. Load it up with mustard, relish, ketchup, onions and sauerkraut. With all that, it’s a real meal.
I can’t say as I have ever seen a ‘hot dog restaurant’ in Canada. Even hot dog carts are rare. Many cities now have ‘food trucks’ offering a wide range of cuisine, but the originals, from the early 80s, were ‘poutine’ trucks in Ottawa, offering poutine, hot dogs, hamburgers and Pogos (corndogs).
I like mine grilled, crispy and nearly blackened, with either brown mustard and sweet relish or brown mustard and kraut. Catsup is a sacrilege!
For home cooked Hot Dogs, I just recently tried Nathan’s Angus hot dogs...the best I’ve had in long time. They’re new at the store I shop at, not sure how long Nathan’s has had them on the market. Seems to me hot dogs used to be so much better on average than they are today. Maybe I’m just getting old.
