Businesses in Bar Harbor, Maine are turning to locals to make up for a shortage of foreign guest workers that normally fill summer jobs in the bustling seaside resort town.
Because the H-2B visa program has already reached its annual quota, Bar Harbors hotels, restaurants and shops cant bring in any more foreign workers for the rest of the busy summer tourist season. Like hundreds of similar coastal resort towns, Bar Harbor has for many years depended on the H-2B visas for temporary workers. The program allows non-agricultural companies to bring in foreign labor if they are unable to find suitable employees domestically.
Now they are coming up with creative ways to attract local labor, reports the Bangor Daily News.
The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce will hold a job fair Saturday in an effort to recruit significant numbers of workers from the region. Just about every kind of business in the town is looking for help, says chamber executive director Martha Searchfield.....

Local workers, you say? Oh, the horror!
bttt
Maybe there are high school kids that could work at those jobs. Maybe it is time to reduce the child labor restrictions.
For example, I started working in the hay fields when I was twelve. And, I am still alive and well. Plus, I had my own money.
The real news is that it seems the entire hospitality industry in Bar Harbor, Maine runs on and is dependent upon foreign labor and does not hire Americans.
The H2B visa program to get legal foreign labor is flooded because Trump is cracking down on illegals. I bet if you check a few years ago, the employees would be illegal aliens and not H2B visa holders.
Sad that they were forced to hire Locals, good of course but should have been a natural to look for Citizens.
Isn't there a law against that!?!?/s
Hmmm...I vacation every August in Tenant’s Harbor and all the workers are local! High school, college kids, older people, etc.
Going up next week and cannot wait.
Poor babies - they have to hire Americans.....

Don’t the LIBidiots feel that work is degrading? How dare they make American Citizens work!!!
Linda Bean practically owns St. George Peninsula. Perhaps she only hires American? She’s a nice lady but she needs to improve our grocery stores which were once amazing little shops and are now given over to only selling her brands.
Oh, and you’d be surprised at how many rebel flags hang out in that area! Trump signs, too.
Local workers?
have to reduce the EBT and food handouts.
Hungry people are great workers.
Now let’s start FINING those criminals who have been BREAKING LAWS !
Get someone’s attention.
“Tenants Harbor and all the workers are local”
Same in Rockport the last time I was there a few years ago.
No we have never had a big illegal population up here. Always been hB1 workers. Every British college student has worked making beds in Bar Harbor, or teaching in a soccer camp, it seems.
we have a number of Somalis and they culturally as a rule do not have a good work ethic.
To be frank, I’ve only seen “working class” white folk work in Maine. It’s one of the whitest states in the country, lol.
If they are willing to ship people in from other countries, there are a ton of college students in nearby states who would welcome the work. Maybe part of their “creative” hiring tactics could include letting them know that this is a thing.
