Capital punishment in the US needs to be debated on its own merits and may eventually go the way of Canada. Until then, a humane society needs to choose the most humane method of employing it
Lethal injection executions, back in the news, just arent working. For a variety of reasons. While they are bloodless (so is strangulation, starvation, and being broken on the wheel), it appears they often are not painless. They most certainly are not quick, sometimes taking hours. They arguably violate the Hippocratic Oath in having a doctor perform them, yet you hardly want an amateur to perform them. And drug companies dont want their products associated with causing death. Go figure!
Dear Huttons,
re: “Who really knows if even the guillotine is painless?”
Beyond ‘painless’, the head is still alive until the brain suffers oxygen starvation. So, it is not that quick.
As the title suggests, find that historical picture of a South Vietnamese general putting a bullet through the head of a captured VietCong, or the video, if you can.
My cat was put down with a sedative, followed by a lethal dose of fentanyl. So quick and painless his eyes were still open.
Idiot.
No thanks Jerry. Not my cup o' tea.
And yet it doesn't apply to "doctor's" who perform abortions.

Based on experience in putting large, terminally injured animals out of their misery, a 9mm Glaser (pre-fragmented) slug administered via the foramen magnum is instantaneous, and, apparently more humane than any other method.
(The foramen magnum is the opening in the skull where the vertebral column attaches.)
The pre-fragmented 9mm slug (actually a thin copper capsule filled with #12 shot, and capped with an epoxy plug) destroys the medulla oblongata -- immediately disconnecting the autonomic nervous system (instantly stopping heartbeat, respiration and bodily sensation). And the slug, disintegrating inside the braincase, apparently disrupts all conscious brain activity instantly.
Usually, the only physical reaction is a slight jolt of the head due to bullet impact. And, as a bonus, the face and eyes are seldom visibly disfigured.
Probably, a .32 or even .25 Glaser might be as effective. However, on that, I have no experiential observation to offer.
IIRC, the shooter retired in the US and owned a pizza joint in the DC suburbs.
Something to think about the next time you order hamburger pizza. All those grey chunks ... Best avoid pizza places in DC.
Yep. NASA has long ago done the research.
Those of us who work with nitrogen (both liquid and compressed) have not forgotten.
Dear cynwoody,
That picture is a standard picture in many ‘snubby’ picture folders. He used an S&W ‘x49 series Bodyguard’.
FWIW, Nguyen Cao Ki owned a block-long, block-wide liquor store in Bellflower, CA.
