The Trump administration could be open to providing legal status to undocumented immigrants who have not committed serious crimes, President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, signaling a major shift in his immigration policy.
Trump could make the call for an immigration bill during his first joint address to Congress on Tuesday night in a speech that could call for compromise on a number of fronts.
“The time is right for an immigration bill if both sides are willing to compromise,” Trump said, adding that individuals seeking legal status would not need to leave the country first.
Mention of the policy during Tuesday night’s speech — which has been billed as a checklist of campaign promises — could roil Trump’s base after the president campaigned on cracking down on illegal immigration across the U.S. border with Mexico.
“By finally enforcing our immigration laws, we will raise wages, help the unemployed, save billions of dollars,and make our communities safer for everyone,” Trump will say, according to excerpts released ahead of the speech.
Early speech excerpts signal Trump could strike a more conciliatory tone than the bombastic new president has done since entering the White House.
“The time for small thinking is over, the time for trivial fights is behind us, we just need the courage to share the dreams that fill our hearts, the bravery to express the hopes that stir our souls, and the confidence to turn those hopes and dreams to action. This is NOT GOOD, NOT GOOD AT ALL. Just as Reagan was fooled in his “comprehensive immigration reform” measure, so Trump would be fooled if we FOOLISHLY go down this path. Who gets on the path to citizenship? Who gets on the path to legalization? Who knows. If Reagan’s experience is any guide, it will be about 3 times what is expected (i.e., because proof of residency for illegals was/is so easy to obtain/forge). So if we expect 5 million, about 15 million will end up on “the golden path”. If we expect 10 million, 30 million will be on the golden path. Because the problem is so much worse now (many, many, many nationalities now involved -— not just Mexicans) the multiple may now be MORE than 3.
THINGS ARE BEGINNING TO SLIP/SLIDE AWAY, I FEAR. And so quickly.
Trump is a unique president in that he doesn’t label easily. I figured he might lean left on some issues and was prepared for that. But I didn’t think it would be on immigration of all things! That’s the one that brought him to the dance in my opinion.

go home because many will not be able to work and then after 3 years, we could start talking about compromise with what is left AFTER the wall has been built and the border secured.
