Report: Senate Dems preparing to filibuster Trump’s SCOTUS nominee — no matter who it is

What a silly thing to say on the eve of Trump making his announcement. Now he has no incentive to choose a seemingly more moderate nominee, like Tom Hardiman, over someone like William Pryor. If it’s true that the filibuster is coming no matter what, then McConnell’s going to have to deploy the nuclear option no matter what — in which case, why not nominate the most hardline judge you can find?

With Trump prepared to announce his nominee on Tuesday evening, Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) said in an interview on Monday morning that he will filibuster any pick that is not Merrick Garland and that the vast majority of his caucus will oppose Trump’s nomination. That means Trump’s nominee will need 60 votes to be confirmed by the Senate.

“This is a stolen seat. This is the first time a Senate majority has stolen a seat,” Merkley said in an interview. “We will use every lever in our power to stop this.”…

We didn’t do this to Clinton or Obama.

If you don't count Garland, yes.

Use the Nuke, they will never play fair, no matter what we do.

I doubt that McConnell could get the 50 votes needed to change the Senate rules to do away with the filibuster for Supreme Court nominees. McConnell himself has said he's reluctant to do so. Collins, McCain, Graham, Paul, Sasse, and Flake are all likely to vote against it.

I predict it will not happen. The Dems will play the game and prolong the vetting process. But in the end....they MUST have an up or down vote. Pretty important that the seat gets filled for both parties. Makes the lower courts superior....

“Does McConnal have the balls to do it ?”

Well, Trump has McConnell’s balls in a vise - his wife is up for a cabinet post. Trump doesn’t get the action he needs from from the Turtle, Mrs. Turtle gets her nomination withdrawn or a big, “You’re FIRED!”

Nope, this will go through. The Turtle may have to go nuclear, but it’ll go through. People elected Trump to do a whole bunch of things, and if the Senate Dems stand in the way, they’re going to get run over by a high-speed freight train. The Senate rules are ONLY RULES - not law, and not part of the Constitution. The Dems set the precedent of changing them to get things done, and now the Pubbies can do the same.

Hell, Trump can meet with Schumer and the rest, and let them know that either they have hearings and allow a vote, or he’s going to push for BOTH the nuclear option AND and expansion of the Supreme Court to 15 Justices. That’ll have an effect, I’m betting. Schumer will cave. Besides, I’m sure that Trump and his people can dig up some dirty on Scummy Chuckie - he IS a politician from the Party of Corruption, after all.

When Hillary was up big in the polls, Schumer told an interviewer that the Dems would use the nuclear option if they needed to in order to get Hillary’s Supreme Court pick through.

So?
Let them filibuster - REALLY filibuster.
Make them stand up there and talk talk talk until they drop. That spectacle will soon turn off the public.
Remember, did Ted Cruz or Rand Paul get any support when they actually filibustered? No, they were ridiculed and slandered.

The problem with the filibuster now is that you only have to say the word and the Republicans cave. You never have to actually stand up there and filibuster.

Make them make fools of themselves and the filibuster threat will fade away real quick.

Liberals will be liberals. They can’t help it. Especially now that they are out of power. The only thing that will change their mind, is their phones being blown up over this.

Shall we start a calling Brigade? A group of volunteers who will call congressmen and senators about how they are obstructing the SCOTUS nomination?

I could see a software package where a person would record a short two or three minute comment (say 5 different recordings that are slightly varied in content. The using an autodialer list, can the office of those responsible for the filibuster then set their computer to call the list of numbers, when connected, play the recorded messages.

Don’t fold to the threat of a filibuster.

Make them do it.

A real filibuster.

Non-stop and when they get tired of reading from the phone book, vote.

All he has to do is make the fillibuster a true fillibuster and demand they be talking and standing on the floor, and as soon as they stop, take the vote.

Constituents can start sending these to his office. Maybe if they start piling up in the mail room, he'll get the message:

McC should let them talk themselves to death. They want to declare a “filibuster” but not really do one.

Claire McCaskill might as well join in, she won't be in the Senate after 2018.
