May I ask a question of anyone - I just sat down at my laptop to do a few things and the only site I can reach so far is FR. Nothing else. No gmail, no national weather service, Drudge, Breitbart, etc. I can mysterious access FR. Every other site I keep trying is not opening. Am I the only one this is happening to?
I get this message on Chrome:
This site cant be reached
twitter.coms server DNS address could not be found. Try: Checking the proxy, firewall, and DNS configuration Running Windows Network Diagnostics DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG
And this on Firefox:
Server not found
Firefox cant find the server at forecast.weather.gov.
Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of www.example.com If you are unable to load any pages, check your computers network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
This site can sometimes give you info about whether or not there may be internet outages in your area.

We have had to reset our cable modem on numerous occasions. We are in an outlying area near the foothills; we feel very lucky to have internet access at all. But we have high winds and frequent power outages especially in the winter. We have had to go on generator power a couple of times in the last month. Things get glitched.
The browser that FR works on has the IP cached. Another browser will not. Your service provider is having issues, and presumably they are scrambling to fix them.
He said his connection started working again after he reset the cable modem.
I can remember my grand parents remarking about things of their bygone youth. Things my siblings and I had only a marginal awareness of. It never occurred to us, that one day we'd look at our own grandchildren and think the same thing.
Metal roller skates.
Coffee percolators
Magnetic tape
Mechanical push mowers
Cars without a/c
Fountain pens
Wooden sash windows
DDT spray on the shelf
Full service gas stations
And many more...
Yes, instead of shut down pick restart.
Aha, got it.
Wrx now so, doesn’t matter...
Thank you, will save it.
When I’m having access problems, I first check routing by pinging an easy to remember Google DNS server:
$ ping 8.8.8.8
Next, ping the public-facing gateway provided by your ISP (WAN.)
Next, ping my home router’s gateway which is often your PC’s IP address with the last octet set to 1; e.g., 192.168.1.1
It’s not uncommon to have DNS failures while still having routing capabilities.
Ahem...
What exactly does “pinging” mean? I really, really am a techtard. I will copy all this but I don’t know how to do it.
ROTFLOL! Now I see the image. :-D
Again, thank you to everyone.
I hope at least I’ve provided a little light amusement...
We live way out in the boondocks surrounded by mountains 4000 plus on one side and 6-7000 on the other, and medium ones in the other directions. Internet goes out all the time. This was just a totally new one to me - no internet except for FR! A first.
LOL
Assuming you’re on Windows, open a command window by pressing the “Windows key” + R. The “Windows key” has the Microsoft icon and is positioned between CTRL and ALT on the left side of the space bar. A small Run window should pop up. Type in the word: cmd. Hit enter. A black window should pop up. Type the following and hit enter:
ping 8.8.8.8
The results should be self explanatory in terms of indicating connectivity.
Also (more technically oriented):
Computers with flashing lights and spinning tape drives.
Mechanical teletypes.
Dialing a mechanical phone and anticipating where to put your finger for the next number while the dial rotated back.
The strange and remarkable sound you heard on the phone if you dialed one number at a time and then waited and pressed the receiver against your ear.
The unique sound of a jet flying over at 30,000 feet, so high you might not see it, only hear its soft whisper.
Seeing people light up cigarettes in public places, like restaurants and retail stores.
Ashtrays everywhere.
Using a phone booth. The light and fan coming on when you sat down on the seat.
Kids your age carrying rifles while riding to the YMCA (which had a shooting range in the basement) on city buses (I actually saw this, many times).
Those little oil-filled spherical burners that road crews used to mark a hole in the pavement, or work on a storm drain. They burned all night with a smoky flame.
Burning leaves in front of your house in a big city.
Huge icicles that grew from the eaves of your house because the attic wasn't insulated because energy was so cheap.
Thank you, copying for future reference.
What is a VPN login?
(As I mentioned above several times, I AM a techtard. I don’t even have a learner’s permit for the information highway.)
Thank you. I feel like a gnat in a room full of elephants...
I really like wooden window frames and fountain pens.
