May I ask a question of anyone - I just sat down at my laptop to do a few things and the only site I can reach so far is FR. Nothing else. No gmail, no national weather service, Drudge, Breitbart, etc. I can mysterious access FR. Every other site I keep trying is not opening. Am I the only one this is happening to?
I get this message on Chrome:
This site cant be reached
twitter.coms server DNS address could not be found. Try: Checking the proxy, firewall, and DNS configuration Running Windows Network Diagnostics DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG
And this on Firefox:
Server not found
Firefox cant find the server at forecast.weather.gov.
Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of www.example.com If you are unable to load any pages, check your computers network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
Russians ... CIA ... six of one, half dozen of another.
I assume rebooting means turning computer on and off? I AM a techtard.
I only see a little square with simple design in it, slightly different little square on Chrome...
How do I find nslookup?
My internet is quite bad. We are now on a satellite with limited bandwidth instead of a faster DSL cable, as was contracted. So,everything is very slow loading, if we can even reach the site. Ugh.
It was like this for over 1/3 of the year in 2016 and 2017 started badly, too.
The company’s excuse is “a shark bit through the underseas cable,” and “an earthquake caused an undersea landslide and severed the cable.” A smart company would have extra cable and manpower prepared for such an event, but Telkomsel in Papua, Indonesia is not a prepared, forward-looking company.
Our projected repair date is Jan. 27. I’ll believe it when it happens.
I cannot send email. I can receive some, but not send. I don’t know why. It doesn’t make sense to me.
I’ve “retrogaded” as far as I can to try to see if there’s anything weird going on with the web: I am typing this on an old laptop with Vista on it, and IE 8. No real problems on NWS that aren’t usually there with this machine. YouTube wants me to upgrade my browser but basically works ok. E-mail (the one that doesn’t throw a lot of ads at me) is ok. Wikipedia is ok. Ebay won’t let me sign in without upgrading my browser, but that’s as usual. Basically, most sites that don’t want to force me to upgrade anyway, seem ok.
FR may be working for you simply because it’s so simple and straightforward, with relatively little data dashing about.
Have you tried shutting down everything completely and then cold starting?

In fact I'm getting tired of it working so well.
:)
Your browser is a hosed POS.
Get Firefox or Brave.
I checked on my phone and two other computers.
I see the pic just fine...
Try clicking on this

But somehow I double posted. Hahaha...
I guess I’ll just unplug/turn off modem and see what happens. If still the same, I’ll turn of computer and start up. I hope even if nothing gets fixed I’ll at least still have Free Republic.
Or else I’ll have to (shudder) call Frontier tomorrow.
Maybe something weird in my small area.
I’m on Firefox and planning to try Brave; I use Chrome for some things.
When I click the link I see this:
Server not found
Firefox cant find the server at www.4thmedia.org.
Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of www.example.com

www.4thmedia.orgs server DNS address could not be found.
Try:
Checking the proxy, firewall, and DNS configuration
Running Windows Network Diagnostics
DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG
I could still spend hours reading on FR even if nothing else works. But...
Try this one....

for later read
When I read your words about the rabbit ears, I experienced a remarkably clear memory of the dusty smell that emanated from the back of my parent's Philco black-and-white television, with its vacuum tubes and strange internal hums and glows. I haven't experienced that memory for decades, and my children will never experience it.
FR often works for me when our ISP is having trouble, or if one of my machines gets flaky — again, I suspect, because there’s not a lot of data flowing.
(In fact, my ISP says they’ll be down for a while tonight for upgrades, and, often communication gets flacky before I / they completely “lose the connection”.)
Sometimes other weird stuff happens too, and we can get only local pages (like the NWS radar, but not the forecast pages, or FR!)
Gotta switch back to my regular machine now, tho...
Hope the restart works for you!
Okay.

Oops, copy/paste didn’t work right, the Chrome message is the same as it has been: site can’t be reached etc.
