A state senator in Florida is sponsoring a handful of gun control bills, citing last weeks airport shooting as a reason to introduce at least one of the measures.
State Sen. Gary Farmer says he plans to introduce a bill that would close the so-called gun show loophole in his state.
Last week horror came to our state and to the Fort Lauderdale airport, Farmer said, according to the Orlando Sentinel. That horror came in the form of a deranged man who shouldve never been allowed to buy, own or in any way possess a dangerous firearm.
Florida Carry Executive Director Sean Caranna says Farmer is just trying to capitalize on the airport shooting, which left five people dead and eight more injured.
That really gets filed every year, and every year they run to the press and bring up whatever the latest gun tragedy du jour as the impetus for filing these perennial bills, said Caranna, in an interview with Guns.com. They either dont even get called up in committee because they have no chance of passing, or they occasionally get called up to committee just so they can be publicly shot down.
Democrats in Florida admit such measures will struggle to pass in the Sunshine States Republican-controlled Legislature. Still, they say its important to propose an alternative to Republican measures, one of which would end gun-free zones in the state. Republican state Sen. Greg Steube filed a bill that would allow Floridians with concealed carry permits to have their guns in places like airport terminals.
Gun-free zones dont prevent criminals from breaking the law and killing innocent victims, said Steube, according to USA Today. All that law did was prevent law-abiding citizens who have a concealed-carry permit from carrying their firearm in defense of themselves and others.
If Sen. Farmer really wanted to do something to make Florida safe, he would focus on abolishing gun-free-zones where law-abiding citizens are defenseless targets of terrorists and people with mental illness, said Marion Hammer, Executive Director of United Sportsmen of Florida, according to Floridapolitics.com.
Sen. Farmer has signed on to sponsor two gun control bills so far in 2017. One would tighten requirements on the safe storage of firearms around minors. Under the proposal, guns that arent in a securely locked box or secured with a trigger lock in locations around minors, defined as someone 16 and younger, would result in a second-degree misdemeanor.
Senate Bill 142 changes the language in the states safe storage law, deleting this line: This subsection does not apply if the minor obtains the firearm as a result of an unlawful entry by any person.
What the bill actually does, is it strikes a provision in the law that if someone breaks into your home and steals your gun, under his bill, you would go to jail, said Caranna. Its obviously idiotic that were gonna punish gun owners who are the victims of crimes, rather than punish the criminals who commit crimes.
Farmer is also co-sponsoring a bill that would ban the sale of so-called assault weapons and large capacity magazines in Florida.
These are small but important steps that if passed will move Florida to a place where our families can live, play and work, and yes, travel to an airport safely, and without fear of being gunned down, or someone bearing arms and lurking around the corner, said Farmer, according to a report from WBBH about the weapons ban.
Farmer told the TV station that the so-called assault weapons ban bill was planned before the shooting at the airport. Still, Caranna says Farmers gun control efforts are well-timed.
Theyre capitalizing on a tragedy, like they always do, said Caranna. Thankfully, we have more good legislators than bad legislators in Florida. And I dont expect to have too much trouble with taking down such a foolhardy bill, he said, talking about Farmers planned expanded background check measure.
Sen. Farmer did not return requests for comment by article publication.
The sane response by Republican state Sen. Greg Steube:
Gun-free zones dont prevent criminals from breaking the law and killing innocent victims, said Steube, according to USA Today. All that law did was prevent law-abiding citizens who have a concealed-carry permit from carrying their firearm in defense of themselves and others.

I thought the guy got his gun from the FBI
Which gave it back to him rather than offend an angry psycho muslim
They immediately claimed 5 dead on the scene within minutes. Those victims likely head shots which were headed towards the ME / morgue; rather than the ER.
All of the ones described by the eye-witnesses have been accounted for in the news. They were near the baggage carousel. Stories about their last vacation & life stories are in various news outlets.
Theres no accounting of One victim.
There has been speculation that the perp was joined by an accomplice in MN or that his first shot was deliberate retaliation. We dont really know. One week has elapsed and they still report 5 dead yet have released only 4 names. No one has been reported missing or unaccounted for in the melee. No foreigner has been reported dead or LEO-down. The sheriff immediately said they never fired upon Santiago-Ruiz.... Who was vic #5?
And from the back-tracking on accounts by the FBI, they did not interview this guy for more than 5-10 minutes. They dumped him on the Anchorage PD. Never followed up on him and he retrieved his weapon. He originally was booking a flight to NYC for NY Eve and switched his booking to FL. There’s more to this story.
It’s going to be a long 2 years for the commies with no power to do a darn thing.
this guy came from Alaska - floriDUH laws would not have stopped it
What the Democrat Marxists do not tell you is the F.B.I. had Esteban Santiago after he walked into the Anchorage FBI Field Office to report that his “mind was being controlled by a U.S. intelligence agency. He then went through a high level background check: Interviewing agents contacted local authorities who took custody of Santiago and transported him to a local medical facility for evaluation. The FBI closed its assessment of Santiago after conducting database reviews, interagency checks, and interviews of his family members. During that evaluation, Santiago had that very weapon he used in the attack confiscated. If, after that evaluation; that weapon was returned to Santiago, what kind of background check would ever stop a mass shooting if a deranged mind had the will to do it? The Marxist Democrats are pissing on our legs and calling it rain.
Bingo, there is none.
basically, the civil rights of millions of law abiding citizens have to be infringed because we can’t violate the civil rights of a handful of murdering scumbags. No thanks.
Democrats push expanded background checks every time someone farts in an elevator.
Why don’t these libtards do something about the incompetent FBI who, once again, let a crazy muzzie slip through their fingers even though the guy raised more red flags than a May Day parade in the old Soviet Union.
Of course he is.
This was inevitable.
“deranged man” = moehammedan islamist

Stupid. The guy didn’t buy the murder weapon in Florida.
A muslim has committed an act of religious war so let us now punish all law abiding citizens.
Gun Show Loophole?
I’ve been to a bunch of Gun Shows, but none were ever held at an Airport.
If a Democrat had a toothache that morning, he/she would immediately sponsor a bill banning toothaches.
If they had a bad hamburger last night, they would sponsor a bill enacting fines and penalties for bad hamburgers.
They do this in California all the time.
“No longer can we....”
“For too long we have .....”
And so, when it is illegal to kidnap a child and has been for 100 years, one gets kidnapped while sitting in their stroller, so that is the nexus of a new law enhancing the penalty for kidnapping should the kidnappee be sitting in their stroller.
Then if they just had their diaper changed, then there is shortly thereafter a new law that if a diaper is less than 30 minutes from having been changed, there should be a sentencing enhancement if a kid is kidnapped so soon after they have their diaper changed, while sitting in their stroller.
These legislators are simpleton goofball pieces of crap who cannot see what a law is or what it does or how existing law was or was not followed in this case. They can only react. They can only try to harness outrage while it is in the news to draw attention to their pathetic selves. All they care about is stamping their names on some law drawn from an experiential example of one that forever affects whatever comes after that example. It’s the same syndrome as 0bama, who just wants to spray his name on your garage door so you think about him when you go earn the money it takes to fix it. They believe they have superior wisdom, come from a superior moral position, and are smarter and more perceptive than all you yokels, so this gives them the right and indeed duty to enact stupid law after stupid law.
That comment is Islamaphobic.
You need to immediately apologize to all Muslims everywhere. The Puerto Rican lived within walking distance of a Mosque in Alaska.
He used a Muslim name in 2007 on the internet and downloaded Muslim songs.
You have no reason to believe this guy has any Muslim ties, so listen to CNN as President Obama has to told you to do and quit listening to the fake news you apparently used. /sarc
The younger Boston Marathon bomber is on the left and the Ft. Lauderdale shooter is on the right. That is NOT the Allah is one sign they both show.
See, even President Hussein Obama has flashed that hand sign in a Muslim setting. I hope no one here is suggesting that Hussein is America's FIRST Muslim President. More/sarc
Another “solution” that would do zero about the incident that sparked it....
