MEXICO CITY (REUTERS) - Mexicos new Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray said on Tuesday (Jan 10) there is no way his country will pay for the wall that US President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to build on the United States southern border to keep out illegal immigrants.
Theres no way that could happen, Videgaray said on Mexican television a few days after his appointment. There are no circumstances...not even the best possible trade deal, investments, support which would justify taking a step that would violate the dignity of Mexicans to such an extent.
The wall has been a bone of contention between Trump and Mexico since the businessman launched his presidential campaign in June 2015, accusing Mexico of sending rapists and drug dealers across the border into the United States.
Trump said on Friday that Mexico would repay the United States for the wall, a day after news emerged that the New Yorkers transition team was exploring getting the Republican-led Congress to vote to approve the funding....

“Tax remittances and they will have no choice. Mexicans shipped $27 billion home last year from the USA.”
Every Pedro or Maria shipped back to Mexico is a savings of x dineros in welfare, food stamps, ADC, etc. And, yes, the illegals DO know the game - guess some enterprising person named Kinesha or something must have written a book.
“They REALLY need Jesus.” True. Young people who are attracted to drugs need to imitate the sober, happy Americans:
1 church a week, 2 family vacations a year, 3 sports a week, 4 homework help from parents a week, 5 family dinners a week and always tell the truth at 12 am midnight to parents. Always. Then drugs go away.
To paraphrase an old saying, where there’s a Trump, there’s a way.
“Which came first, the addict or the pusher?”
Demand drives the economy and drives the market for drugs.
“The US needs a way to detect tunnels.”
Dogs can do that, esp. dogs like weiner dogs.
Someone has to do it, right? Might as well be Mexico.
We’ll talk about it, Mexico. We’ll talk about it.
There’s sooooo many ways to make them pay... the car companies are just the beginning.
Trump never said he would get them to give him a check - he said he’d make them pay.
In this argument, Mexico is the beggar.
They did when Toyota said they were spending 10B here instead of Mexico.
A US-Isreal cooperation should drive tunnel identification technology forward rspidly.
It will not be up to Mexico to decide to pay or not. Trump can add a surcharge to visas or border crossing cards issued to Mexicans. He could levy a duty on goods imported from Mexico. There could be a tax on the remittances sent to Mexico, which total $22 billion a year. There are many ways to get the Mexicans to pay for the wall.
Sonar. Motion detectors. A whole host of things that can.
Hell, in the dark ages, they could detect mining under castle walls by the enemy. AND, they were good enough to counter tunnel and end up joining the tunnels nearly exactly in match. Whole battles would then be fought under ground in those tunnels. Can you imagine what that was like?
Instead give them the bills for education, food and healthcare of their citizens. About 200 billion a year?
Yeah, 5% tax on remittances to Mexico will pay for it in 5 years and upkeep the ICE brigade that protects it annually.
LS was in Trump tower this weekend and it’s a done deal. Trump has found INGENIOUS way(s) to have Mexico pay for the wall. Made me so happy.
Taco trucks on every corner?
Just out of curiously, how much would the return of one million Mexicans cost the Mexican government, I wonder? I'm just using some rough napkin numbers, but let's say that represents the loss of 2 billion dollars in yearly remittances, an increase in health care costs of one billion per year, increase in education costs of 1.7 billion dollars per year, increase in social service costs of half a billion per year, plus an immediate drop in employment rates of 1%.
But I was just figuring 'average' Mexican citizen living illegally in the United States. Let's say that 1 million are comprised of those who have outstanding convictions or pending charges, repeated offenders, etc, the ones Trump has said the focus would initially be on.
On the plus side, there's only a quarter billion drop in imported remittances. But an increase of 3 billion in education and health care, an additional billion in prison costs, and an additional 1.8 billion in social services.
Honestly, I really hope Mexico keeps on going on the path they're going on, because if people are rioting over a few percentage increase in the current cost of gasoline and diesel, it's going to be a FUN time when people start rioting over cuts in health care, welfare, education, etc as they pay for repatriated citizens.
