What does it take to teach Gun fighting?
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 11/28/2016 | J Hines

Colin Noir and Travis Haley of Haley Strategic are discussing the subject of "teaching gun fighting". But, more specifically "can you teach gun fighting, if you’ve never seen a gun fight?"

For those who aren't familiar with who Haley is, here's a quick bio taken from his site:

"Travis Haley is a veteran Force Reconnaissance Marine with 15 years of dedicated real world experience including: combat tours in Middle East, Africa and Central Asia. After leaving the military, Mr Haley served as a special operations and security contractor before partnering with Magpul as founder and CEO of their training division, Magpul Dynamics. Mr Haley also served as CEO of the parent company, Magpul Industries, before breaking off to form the endeavor that would become Haley Strategic Partners."

Colion Noir: Alright folkes, and we're back, and joining me live is Travis Haley from Arizona, and before we went to break, we started to touch on the aspects of actually teaching people how to shoot. And so I'll just ask you flat out: What do you think it takes to teach the way you do?

Travis Haley: Whooh, um, well I think– First off, as I've been saying, understanding people is the number one attribute to a –and I use the word 'teacher' or 'instructor' very carefully, and uh, kinda like Bruce Lee did, and I just recently started reading and studying him in the last year or two, and I was like 'wow, there's a lot of crossover here from his mindset'.

Where, -and I agree with what he said, it's, he finds it almost impossible to actually teach somebody something. And I know that sounds crazy, it's like, 'well why would I want to spend my hard-earned money and time to go to your classes if you can’t teach me something’

Colion: Yeah, 'you tricked me'.

Travis: Right! [Chuckling] And it's because only you can really follow through on the teaching aspect, right? It's the student and teacher combination, it's not just the teacher, coming in and saying 'Hey man, here's my resume, this is how many combat tours I got, this is how I've been shooting, how many millions of rounds, here's my program of instruction, now you better keep up!' and that's what– I see that. That has to happen in some regard in the military, and law enforcement, because you gotta see who can hang with that stress and mentality, but when I've got three days or five days or six days to work with somebody, attrition is not my mission. It's upholding a higher standard of care for everybody. And so I think that's where the understanding of people comes into play, so I always use like a GPS analogy. When that GPS tells you to turn right in 900 feet because you're trying to get from point A to B, is it actually physically attached to the steering wheel? Does it turn the car? See the rest of the video discussion here. What do you all think?

What does it take?

Someone who’s actually DONE it, and survived it.

1. The best gun fight is the one you never got into in the first place.

2. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

3. You never rise up to the occasion, you fall back to your most basic level of training.

4. Concealed weapons are meant to be felt (by you opponent) not seen.

War is entirely different. Large numbers of men fire guns, mortar shells, and artillery rounds in the general direction of the enemy.

Cowboy movies from the 50s.

Yeah, and I like the recent Hollywood shoot-em-ups too. You know you're a skilled gunfighter when:

1. Your 15-round magazine regenerates ammunition while it's still in the gun and you get about 35 shots off it;

2. When you hit a guy he flies backwards through the air doing backflips and explodes before he hits the ground;

3. You can personally carry 185 lbs of ammunition under a trench coat without printing;

4. The car you're shooting blows up.

The old Westerns did have a couple of interesting techniques: if you flip the barrel of your gun at the opponent it generates enough extra muzzle velocity to blow his hat off his head. Still working on that one. The problem is finding practice partners who are dumb enough...

I found another article at the same website that addresses the "Zen" between instructor and student.
If you're spending much money, it is best you know the personality type of the instructor, as well as knowing how you (the student)learn best.
This makes the more efficient, productive, and effective relationship between the instructor and student.
Everyone has different learning skills, and some are more productive than others.
The article differentiates between characteristics of best instructor types for the student: inter-personal, intra-personal, and visual.
For students, this article differentiates various best learning methods : hearing, visual, and kinetic (action oriented/ muscle memory).

The article can be found at the same site :
hyper link www.http://americanshootingjournal.com/rant-tactical-instructors/
This will get you the best instruction suited for your particular learning style, and maximize the effectiveness of the expense.

When the trainer with the full helmet told the woman to hit him, I was kinda hoping she’d knee him in the nuts.

Love that illustration. Straight from the movie “Equilibrium”. It was the Matrix before the Matrix was the Matrix.

Gunkata. It’s just like every other movie martial arts. Looks really cool, not realistic at all.
