RUMOR: John Bolton to be Named Secretary of State
Red State ^ | 11/14/2015

Posted on 11/14/2016 1:08:16 PM PST by SeekAndFind

This is thin, but it fits into everything that is being said about filling the Secretary of State position.

Source says John Bolton is close to being named Secretary of State, Corker still a remote possibility, Gingrich is out

— Ryan Grim (@ryangrim) November 14, 2016

Bolton would be an inspired choice both in terms of the temperament needed to turn around a fat, flailing and failing State Department that is more interested in being liked by the right people than in pursuing the nation’s interests and in the message it sends.

State is a byzantine organization with its own personnel regulations and it has traditionally operated as though it was the sole adult in the room and the president, especially when the president was a Republican, was an unruly child. Bolton has caused the Iranians and North Koreans to complain about him in the past and the Democrats filibustered his appointment as UN ambassador. His nomination would be a sign that Trump is serious about foreign policy and that he’s not afraid to make enemies of the right people.

I don’t necessarily think Gingrich is looking to get back into government at that level although I would prefer almost anyone to Bolton honestly.

I know some have on the board have expressed reservations about Bolton. I can definitely see that perspective.

In Bolton’s favor, if you are looking to drain the swamp, someone with the knowledge of how that bloated bureaucracy functions and who knows where all the ‘gators are is probably someone you want to see.

From my understanding, Bolton is also well liked and has relationships with diplomacy staff across numerous other countries.

If Trump’s goals are (1) represent USA interests, (2) execute the foreign policy vision of a Trump administration and (3) drain the swamp at State, I think Bolton would be very capable.

Trump doesn’t strike me as someone who will let a Secretary deviate much from his high-level objectives. I’m sure he will reward initiative and creative thinking but at the same time, I don’t think he would be a President to wait too long to take corrective action if he thinks a Secretary isn’t working out for his policy goals.

Priebus will do just fine. Remember, he’s not a policy-maker. He just (just???) runs POTUS’ cabinet.

Bolton is good. Bannon is good. Preibus ... probably OK, but I reserve judgment.

Preibus worked with Trump to get him elected. Trump values his service. He is comfortable with him. Better yet the Trump kids, his board of directors, signed off on him.

National Security advisor for Newt?

I'm betting on Flynn for National Security Advisor since he can't be Secretary of Defense. Newt is not the kind of guy to be pacified with a "Senior Advisor to the President" kind of job. And I don't recall any of Trump's kids being in Newt's corner. So he could be out in the cold if this story is true. If...

Balance to Trump’s tendency to not get involved overseas. I like healthy debate over predetermined agenda. Bolton will not always win the argument with Trump, but he will bring facts to the debate.

In badly needed clean-up of State, he probably knows where the bodies are buried.

Most of his picks are not currently plugged into the system even if they used to be. I am ok with this , but could be a lemon

I know it would never happen, but I’d love to see Newt as Trump’s press secy. You’d see members of the WH press corps go grey over night! ;o)

From what I have heard, Gingrich has indicated he’d like to take a position that gives him latitude to move around the federal bureaucracy.

To that end, I can see him in a position where his mandate is to completely transform the federal bureaucracy across all departments and implement reforms, eliminate waste and redundancy, and improve responsiveness.

We know there are probably billions, perhaps close to a trillion that could be saved if all aspects of federal bureaucracy were reformed, including the dissolving of departments, changing how procurement is done, possibly eliminating public sector unions, etc.

Gingrich has spoken about applying lean six sigma, total quality management and other philosophies to reduce government costs. Heck, just automating functions using the Internet could reduce staffing requirements.
