One of the biggest ironies of the first presidential debate is that Donald Trumps reluctance to aggressively attack Hillary Clinton has now given him the license to fully do so.
Going into the debate his debut on the worlds biggest stage everyone, including his closest aides, was telling him that he must achieve plausibility: That is, he needed to reassure voters by looking reasonable, confident and self-possessed. If he were able to demonstrate an even temperament and basic command of the issues, voters could picture him behind the Resolute desk in the Oval Office and Mrs. Clintons negative ads about his unfitness would melt away.
Mr. Trump took his marching orders seriously and pulled his punches, at one point even acknowledging his self-restraint: I was going to say something really rough about Hillary and her family, but I told myself it was not nice. But she spent tons of money on horrible ads about me, and Ive spent virtually nothing.
Many are now demanding that he truly go on the attack. Since its in the political bloodstream that he did not hit her proactively the last time, he now has a free hand to up the ante without being stigmatized as an unsuitable hothead...

He needs to hit her on her laughing at getting a rape victim off. He should have done this already and the election would have been over
I recommend Trump say “Ambassador Stevens made a dozen requests for additional security. Now he and two other fine Americans are dead because you ignored them, and you lied to their families about it. And now you want the American people to trust you to protect them?” Repeat as needed.
Monica Crowleys a good conservative, and she was pretty fair to Trump even during the primaries. She first got her start helping Nixon write some of his last books before he died, and she was there with him as Pat Nixon was dying. She wrote two books about her time with Nixon, and they are some of the most revealing, personal, and interesting books ever written about him. Nowadays, she appears as a commentator on Fox News a lot.
#1 and 2 would be sufficient.
The next time a “moderator” interrupts Trump to “fact-check” him; he should invite him or her onto the stage to stand beside Hillary. He could offer to debate them both as a tag-team — so long as he still gets his time allocation.
Yep.
Trump stopped being “fun” when he started being nice.
If I wanted “nice” I would of voted for one of the other clowns that ran!
So True.
Seems to me Trump waded in post convention August pre back to work school. Learned his footing got to know what he was up against
Ditto debate I. It’s how let trump be trump works. It’s recon.
Maybe I’m wrong. He’s a business man. He takes risks and comes out ahead. We’re just not used to watching it unfold.
Hillary has everyone but half of the American people on her side. My guess is it’s the 33% plus cheating
Anyway Monica Crowley is just about always correct. I hope trump has her on payroll
Me TOO!!
I like her.
He needs to smile
Isn’t Her Sister married to Alan Colmes?
Ou mean the mostly female liberal schills Hillary has already chosen to ask sexist questions about his past?
If he would break protocol and make his main points in the opening statement he could maybe get them in without being interrupted by the moderator. Also say for the sake of argument the points already made about him will not be responded to - already answered and it is time to get to the actual issues, not the personalities.
I saw Reince Priebus on a show the other day and he was doing this perfectly. Block and deflect. Kind of shocked me but he did it better than anyone I’ve seen. Priebus should be giving Trump lessons.
Yep, and I don’t know how she can stand having Colmes as a brother-in-law. (It’s not nearly as bad as having Carville as a husband like Mary Matalin though of course...nothing could be that bad.)
Can’t disagree. How about if Trump attacks the Benghazi issue via the parents of the fallen, for example:
“During this campaign, I’ve met tens of thousands of fine Americans who have worn the uniform of this blessed country, as well as their families.
In addition, seventeen Medal of Honor winners and approximately two hundred generals and admirals support my candidacy.
I cannot begin to tell you how humbling that support is to me. My gratitude for their support will last a lifetime.
The honor of these fine people is a stark contrast to Hillary Clinton.
Hillary Clinton refused to properly secure that facility, even though many requests had been made - how horrible. But that’s not the worst thing. Far from it.
No, what is unforgivable is what Hillary Clinton did after the Benghazi attack. She knew that it was a terrorist attack yet she lied to the American people saying the attack was due to a YouTube video.
Even worse, she told that lie to the faces of the grieving families... there... on the tarmac... as those families gazed upon the flag draped coffins of their dead sons... heroes... who sacrificed their lives to save fellow Americans in peril. And they saved many.
When Hillary Clinton was rightfully condemned for this action, she not only denied what she did, she slandered the families of the fallen.
What Hillary Clinton did is more than incompetence - it is evil.
(Trump then pauses for effect, slowly turns toward Hillary.)
Hillary, shame on you. How can you look in the mirror after what you did to those fine Americans?”
That could be a very effective moment. Use the power of story to make the case.
I doubt the Hillary crew would allow that...
You lied to their faces in front of their flag draped coffins to save your own fat ass while you threw an innocent man in jail because you were running guns to terrorists.
