With the latest guns, scopes, and laser rangefinders, well-practiced hunters are able to confidently take game at over 1,000 yards.
If you are looking to break into the long range hunting arena, or are trying to improve your long range accuracy, listen to what the experts at Red Rock Precision Rifles feel are the best cartridges for long range hunting.
Shooters sensitive to recoil should choose a 28 Nosler and those looking for more power should choose a .300 Remington Ultra Mag. However, thats just one mans opinion.
If it's deer or deer-sized game youre chasing, you cant go wrong with the 6.5 Creedmoor, though tons of long range game animals have fallen to the good old .300 Winchester Magnum, and the new Weatherby 6.5-3000 is quickly making a name for itself. See the video here. What are you all using?
Bowie knife - I like up close and personal....
My long range hunting was done with either a Titan II ICBM with a Mk-6, 9Mt, warhead or a Minuteman II ICBM with the Mk-12a Re-entry System with three W-78 warheads inside.
I could get my game out to 7000 miles.
270Win for the deer & antelope.
300Win for the elk.
Both are very flat for the ranges I would ever take a shot at while hunting.
.308 and 30-06. For big nasty things .375 H & H.
nice
Yeah, but at that distance the meat would have been spoiled by the time you could get to it.
I didn't build a pond on my property for ducks ya know.
I have seen the videos of successful 1000 yard shots on game and those YouTube videos get the same amount of comments deriding the hunters taking the shot. I notice that people who post themselves taking 1000 yard shots on game don't seem to include the times they missed or wounded the animal.
Phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range.
LOL! At what range do you draw the line? 450? 500? ????
there are very, very few hunters capable of taking a 1000 yd shot on any game, much less big game.
I can tell you that if I’m hunting with someone who even tries to take such a shot, I’d use the butt of my rifle on his/her head.
No such shot is EVER ETHICAL.
I have never fired a shot on ‘big game’ longer than 325 yards, and then only once.
just a touch overbore don’t you think? LOL
Nah ... it’s kinda wimpy and short ranged compared to a couple other guys on this thread.
“if he is able to run 1000+ yards to overcome and dispatch a wounded game animal which is basically what’s going to end up happening”
Run? In places where you can take a 1000 yard shot you don’t hunt without a quad.
Yeah, I guess so. LOL
Oh, you mean kill it myself? Sledgehammer.
So, thanks to the quad hunters can now take unethical 1000 yard shots that are likely to only wound a game animal?
Whatever dude.
Do you actually hunt? I doubt it because you would never have said ‘run after’ if you hunted in NV. Have you tried to get close to an Elk? Try it sometime.
As you should know, out here Elk will see you coming MILES away. There is no cover except the ground itself.
And a lot of folks hunt things like coyote and prairie dogs. Not ‘game’ and no big deal if they are wounded to die later. (yeah I know many people use smaller carriages for that).
Ever go out to BLM land and actually pace off 1000 yards, out in the desert? It isn’t much.
Back when I did hunt it was in places with heavy woods. A wounding shot is not that uncommon and not some horrible terrible end of the world unethical thing. S**t happens. Dudes would shoot at a moving target at 50 yards. Is that really so much harder and more chancy than a stationary target at 1000 (if you have the right gun and gear)?
“No such shot is EVER ETHICAL.”
Good thing ‘ethical’ hunters never ever take shots at game that is far away, or moving, or partly obscured. Never.
heh.
I like the WP idea. Hunt and cook at the same time. If you could find a way to add BBQ sauce to the WP, wow that would be something!
