... Activated charcoal has been used for years in the ER to absorb toxins after inadvertent exposure to chemicals and to absorb medications after accidental overdoses. The multipurpose treatment has also been prescribed for digestive conditions, especially those that cause gas and bloating. In addition, claims suggest the ingredient may help whiten teeth, improve complexion, lower cholesterol, prevent hangovers and boost energy.

Let us know how long it takes to get rid of the "black tongue"......
Black Tongues Matter
I can vouch for this in this sense:
I first got activated charcoal when my dog ate a bunch of chocolate years ago.
I then got food poisoning from SEAFOOD. One of the worst kinds of food poisoning that can leave you sick for days.
I took the tablets about two hours after symptoms started appearing..I did suffer for a little while because I didn’t take it right away but I was better the next morning. The person I went to the restaurant with was sick for 3 days.
Since then..I have used it when I first notice something wrong. It can happen after you eat salad, too. If I start to feel the stomach rumble or I start having diarrhea..I get out the caps.
One episode recently, I only had one capsule. I think I got the food poisoning from oil that had garlic in it because it didn’t have the thing in it to keep it from going bad.(can’t remember what it is suppose to have)
I had to wait for that one tablet to kick in before I rushed to Walgreens to get another bottle!
And yes, you have to be careful if you are on medication. It will absorb it.
I call activated charcoal my miracle cure. I Tell everyone to have it. If you take it right away ..you will notice the positive reaction fairly quickly.
Also used it topically on spider bites. Alternative is Prid for that.
Activated charcoal capsules were our go to medication for stomach complaints when we lived in Europe. Anything over the counter we were used to getting here required a doctor’s prescription. And their OTC meds were almost all homeopathic (which, frankly, I still consider packaged placebo effect). We keep the charcoal caps on hand because they work.
Not sure about Kingsford, but I tried the Match Light brand and it must have been activated because ‘wow’ need it packs a wallop when combined with a cigar after meals.
In High school a friend Overdosed on psychedelic mushrooms.
He went to hospital.
They gave him charcoal.
Charcoal is fun to make and is one of the tools in my toolbox for water filtration post SHTF, or just camping.
After you poop out the charcoal, you can use your turds on the grill to make burgers.
You will have something other than “black tongue” to worry about.
I have one of those dog biscuit makers and made our dog greenies. Chlorophyll and activated charcoal are part of the recipe.
It’s likely the vinegar and not the cabbage that’s doing the job.
Garlic and onions are good antibiotics.
I love Prid. Carry it everywhere. It is good for so much.
“I get plenty of charcoal when I grill something. I thought that was supposed to be bad for you. I wish theyd make up their minds.”
It’s only good for you when you pay $9.99 a pint for it ...
Since you can’t tell if a spider bite is from a nasty one or an innocent one..I always slap Prid on it.
I have seen too many pics of what happens with a brown recluse.
I recently had something where the skin started to get infected and crater . So on went the Prid. Cleared it up.
Pretty much anything I throw on the BBQ ends up having some charcoal on it. Was this article sponsored by Weber Grills? :-)
I find it fascinating to read so many proudly ignorant comments. Activated charcoal is cheap, safe, and used by hospitals. But so many FReepers are so totally free from ever needing medical care, especially emergency care, that they can mock it.
Well, I wish all of you mockers a life completely devoid of activated charcoal - may it never come remotely near you, and may you and your doctors and caretakers forget it even exists.
(That’s a horrible, agonizing curse, by the way, for those of you in Rio Linda.)
I’ll remember the sauerkraut and garlic. Thanks.
Wonder if you know a natural treatment for psoriasis?
“Well, I wish all of you mockers a life completely devoid of activated charcoal “
From the article:
The guts micro-biome is complicated, and the effects of any quick-fix forms of detoxing are usually short-lived, says gastroenterologist Gerard Mullin, MD, an associate professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and author of the forthcoming The Gut Balance Revolution.
People do all kinds of cleansing rituals, and there is something to be said about reducing the toll of toxins, Mullin tells Yahoo Health. But it takes a more sophisticated approach than purging the system in this capacity. Since activated charcoal can bind to medications and nutrients, which may be harmful, its not something I would promote.
According to Frank Lipman, MD, an integrative and functional medicine specialist, too much charcoal might indeed work against you. We used to use it many years ago, but in my experience, a lot of patients used to get constipated on it, he tells Yahoo Health. So, Im wary of adding it to drinks and go it becoming a fad. Especially if youre looking to detox, constipation not exactly the effect you want to achieve.
