“how the Hell is Cersei Queen? She isn’t in the Bloody Line of Succession!”
Easy. She’s holding the reins of political power, and no one is there to oppose her.
Yet.
My guess for next year.... Jon Snow is going to be king eventually, and will be fighting along side the dragon queen to defeat the white walkers and then the Lannisters, because he is actually a Targaryen, so he is half brother to the dragon queen. His father is the mad king, not Ned Stark. Ned Stark’s sister gave birth to Jon Snow after she was raped by the mad king.
A lot of talk here about succession.
I have to point out the obvious:
Aerys II was succeeded by Robert Baratheon.
Robert Baratheon was succeeded by two Lannister boys who were not related to him.
Succession is “whatever” in Westeros.
Nephew, not brother.
His father is the mad king,
Rhaegar is his father, son of the mad king, brother of Daenerys.
The Green Trial.
I don’t know if he killed himself out of penance for his mother’s crimes or loss of Margery, but he was the most moral of her children. The irony that she protected him from the destructive act and he still died is intense.
As the queen mother, she is claiming it, though whether or not she has the legal authority is open to debate. Who WANTS to debate it is uncertain.
There is also the fact that without heirs herself or legitimate close relatives of her husband, a nation that just fought a war of the five kings has no one but Cersei ready, able and supported by many to take the throne until Danerys shows up.
But after Cersei just killed a lot of people and a major holy landmark, a lot of people who didn’t care about the Lannister/Baratheon rulers as long as there was peace now want anyone but her.
Imagine how the Lady of Thorns is going to react to the “green judgement”? Methinks that - like Sansa was given the privilege of managing Ramsey’s demise, so will Olenna be given special permission to end Cersei’s “suffering”...
Love that the speculation is that there are just three dragons and Dany rides one of them. Future riders are expected to be Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister, now the hand of Dany, Queen of the Dragons.
It’s all lined up now for some epic battles for the throne during the next season. Hard to wait for it.
Some divergence from the books here, for those who care.
In the Epilogue of the fifth book of the series, Kevan Lannister is emerging as the power behind the throne, unifying the Faith and the Kingdom under Tommen. He is shot with a crossbow by Varys in Picelle's chamber. Picelle is slumped across the table, having been brained by Varys.
Varys then summons the whisperers to finish off Kevan. His stated reason is that Kevan was undoing much of the mess created by Cersei, and that with him gone, things would fall apart in Kings Landing. Presumably this was done to weaken Westeros prior to Dany's invasion.
I believe this now kills every “king” in the war of the five kings, plus a lot of their heirs (Shireen, Tomen, etc).
There are now some noble houses standing (Eyrie, Tully) but many others decimated and unable and unwilling to oppose Danerys when she arrives.
Add in that she has the backing of Dorne, the surviving matriarch of house Tyrell and a Queen of the Ironborn people will support because it means an end of the reaving ... and maybe or maybe not support from the North just for letting its current arrangement stand.
It simplifies the plot, and this episode does solidify the idea that Sansa Stark is the younger queen likely to take her place - though whether with Tyrion or Littlefinger as her husband is TBD.
Or Tyrion as her husband with her as Queen of the North, a reward / encouragement of Danerys to solidify her political support there. Then make Jon as Daenrys’ brother’s son her heir because Danny can’t have children.
It is a simple way to take out everyone who hates you, because you’re killing everyone who hated you enough to want to see your trial.
Especially with Renly and Stannis getting their armies decimated fighting.
Well, they were Baratheon boys by name because it was assumed they were the children of Robert and Cersei. It is still considered a dirty rumor that they were the products of Lannister incest.
It was an interesting detail to take off his crown, THEN jump, as if saying I’m not fit to lead, I leave.
Per. Fect.
Ahhh.. too darn confusing. I’ll just watch it and shut my trap.
