Ready to kick your Craigslist game up a notch? Maybe you're a regular seller on the site or maybe you want to get started. Either way, we'll cover the basics of how to make money on Craigslist so you can start using the site as your side hustle and make your listings stand out from the crowd.
1. Getting Started
If you don't already have a Craigslist account you'll need to make one if you want to make money on Craigslist. On your local Craigslist site, (e.g. newyork.craigslist.org) you'll see a link in the top left that says "post to classifieds." Click on that link. Then in the top right you'll see an option to log in to an existing account or create an account. To create a new account you'll go through the usual steps to getting set up with a new site (providing your email, etc.).
Once you have an account set up you can create your first listing. The first thing you'll do is select the type of posting you're creating. If you're selling an item you can choose "for sale by owner." Then you'll choose the category of the good from a long list that includes things like "antiques," "appliances," "bicycles," "furniture," "jewelry," "tools" and more. Depending on your area, once you select a category you may be asked to narrow down your location. For example, in New York you'll be asked which borough you're in....

Easy to get ripped off. If you meet in a public place, do not buy something electronic that can’t be tested then and there. My son learned that one the hard way.
If you live in a gated community, tell the buyer coming to yr home that they need to bring their driver’s license, that the gate will ask for it while you come in. The gate won’t, but that will weed out someone who is coming to rob, attack, or rape.
For safety I prefer ebay.
Yes, great deals on products you know well. So you will know right away if it’s ok. I’m always searching for used gymnastic stuff like trampolines etc.
Say for example I need Eau de toilette. My wife ( the boss with credentials) gets busy sending emails. BOOM - three or more bottles (not samples, but real product) arrive in days. You know how much a bottle of Eau de toilette can go for? Up to 100 euros in the stores. We test them, I help my wife with the reviews that get emailed to buyers. I keep the one I like and sell the rest.
Been doing like that for years. Started out with music CDs but that tanked so we moved into many other stuff over the years. We are not rich, have no car or make the main income from it but we go to Binz for two weeks ( or more) in the summer and everyone is happy.
How to make money on Craigslist?
Near as I can figure you either sell stolen goods or ahem.. er.. yourself.
I think it entirely depends on where you live whether or not CL is a good deal and a good bet with regard to safety.
I have been a regular seller and occasional buyer for years. I am cleaning our my closets right now, in fact. I have read all the warnings and scares. I am wary of some buyers and comfortable with others. I say right in my ad that I will meet in a public place. If I am the least bit doubtful about a transaction, I take my husband or a teenage son with me for a sale. I often find the buyers do the same. I have an inverter in my car that will handle plugging in some small items to verify function.
The worst problem I have had is with the flakes. They write once and never again. I have heard of scammers who try to get email and phone number so they can set up accounts from overseas with an unsuspecting American’s contact information. I use a temporary email address to send the first response from and I don’t give them my phone number at first, either.
And then there are the silly, selfish goofballs who don’t check my location until we’ve invested time in 6 emails and 5 texts and then try to get me to drive 40 minutes one way to “meet them half way”. That is something else I put in my ad. I am sorry, but I can’t include delivery with the price of this $15 toaster.
Overall, I am satisfied, though. I have managed to make quite a lot of cash lately. I am an Ebay seller, too, but the shipping cost and hassles as well as Ebay and Paypal fees nibble away at the profits. You’ve got to be more careful with descriptions and there is always the chance of hooking a vindictive buyer who’ll try to make your life miserable with Ebay who often sides with the nasty buyer, or so I have heard.
I think the most important advice about CL is to be cautious. If it seems like a scam, it probably is. People who aren’t scamming you will likely volunteer information such as “I can be there at 3 right after I pick up my son from daycare” and, if they are intent on raping or mugging you, they’ll probably try to talk you into meeting somewhere other than a busy Walmart parking lot on your lunch hour. In fact, if your area is particularly high risk, I have heard of some people arranging transactions in the lobby of the police station.
Craigslist is great! I hear about scammers and criminals using it, but I have had very good luck with it. I have bought and sold a lot of stuff over the years... I started using it when everything collapsed in ‘08 and I did foreclosure clean-outs when my drafting job dried up... It was amazing all good stuff that got left behind, that I was paid to haul off.
Generally I have 100 ads up at any given time. Because I have been a packrat (now known as a hoarder) all my life, My backyard was literally a small junkyard at one point... it has provided the supplemental income that has kept us afloat the past 3+ years that finding drafting work has been dismal...
and everyone is happy.
One of the interesting things about craigslist is that it NEVER EVER deletes your posts. They are always there. I have an account that goes back to 2006 and all my posts are there.
Makes one wonder why? Classified are ephemera really.
Who owns them.
So why does Craigslist keep them more than a year?
I use my credit union. Cameras and a warm place inside.
Aren’t you suppose to go in and delete them yourself?
Me too but I've also attracted a number of phony inquiries. I don't know why they do that, maybe they're just lonely.....LOL!
Want to buy a bamboo fly rod?
That peace sign they use as their logo is enough for me.
I’ve bought stuff on CL, paid with paypal, had it shipped.
Bought a car on CL in PN I’m in ND. Downpayment by paypal, bank money order when we got there.
I use adhuntr.com to “search all” of CL.
Never had a problem.
I saw an ad to rent a house for a short time during an airshow we were attending. There were photos and all. Very legit looking like a vrbo ad. I inquired as to payment and was given banking information to take to Bank of America and do a deposit into this account. I did a search on trulia with the address and noted this particular house was for sale. Flag went up! I spoke to the bank and told me that there’s something fishy on this guys account and recommended not to do business with him. It turns out that empty for sale houses owned by other people are being offered for rent by strangers who take the money and run. No more Craig’s list for me.
The mee-he-can or the mower?
Half the time I get ads deleted (flagged) by either some nitwit who thinks I'm selling prohibited items or their "high tech" software picking up something in the ad that raises red flags.
Had ads flagged and removed for selling AK47 Mag Pouches(just the cloth pouches, no mags), Remington and Winchester pocket knives and similar items that are not prohibited but sounded scary.
Craigslist is owned by Ebay so it is run by fools.
One can make money but you have to be creative in your wording when selling certain items.
In my area there are some good deals (though less and less as time goes on) because Americans are evacuating northeastern NJ. It is like a flea market with desperate sellers; I’ve sold some camping/prepping gear with no issues, and bought a couple of things as well. Tents go very quickly, and I’ve sold several Y-suspender/utility belt rigs as well.
We have job postings on Craigslist here in NJ that are solely in Spanish...
I’ve done about a half a million in business off of Craigslist. I have been scammed for $350.00.
