Individuals living in New York City can choose from a minimum of 31 different gender identities, many of which allow them to fluctuate between some version or combination of male or female identities.
Businesses that dont respect and accommodate an individuals chosen gender identity risk incurring six-figure fines under rules implemented by the citys Commission on Human Rights.
The list of protected gender identities is available online and includes options such as gender bender, two spirit, third sex, androgynous, gender gifted, and pangender. A city official speaking on background confirmed to The Daily Caller that all of the listed identities are protected by the citys anti-discrimination laws, but said that the list was not exhaustive.
The city does not provide definitions of the various gender identities, but TheDC was able to define several of them from glossaries provided online by the University of Wisconsin and the University of California Berkeley.
Someone who identifies as genderqueer, for example, is a person whose gender identity is neither man nor woman, is between or beyond genders, or is some combination of genders.
A gender bender is someone who bends, changes, mixes, or combines societys gender conventions by expressing elements of masculinity and femininity together.
Similarly, someone who is gender fluid is a person whose gender identification and presentation shifts, whether within or outside of societal, gender-based expectations.
If someone self-identifies as androgynous, it means they are appearing and/or identifying as neither man nor woman, presenting a gender either mixed or neutral.
Two spirit individuals are Native Americans who have attributes of both men and women, have distinct gender and social roles in their tribes, and are often involved with mystical rituals (shamans).
If someone is pangender, their gender identity is comprised of all or many gender expressions.
The full list of gender identities can be viewed online in a document provided by the citys Commission on Human Rights.
The citys gender identity guidance was issued in December but has been the subject of ongoing media attention in the past week. As noted by law professor Eugene Volokh, businesses can be fined up to six figures for knowingly using the wrong pronouns to refer to a customer or employee.
Seth Hoy, the Human Rights Commissions press secretary, told TheDC that the guidance was issued to ensure that every transgender individual in New York City is treated with the respect and dignity they deserve but assured that that accidentally using the wrong pronouns will not result in a fine. His full statement is below:
The Commissions legal guidance on gender identity protections under the NYC Human Rights Law addresses situations in which individuals intentionally and repeatedly target transgender and gender non-conforming people. Accidentally misusing a transgender persons preferred pronoun is not a violation of the law and will not result in a fine. The Commission issued this guidance last year so that employers and individuals understand what the law says and to ensure that every transgender individual in New York City is treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.
Insanity
New York Values.
Doesn’t Facebook have 57? Sounds like we need some standardization.
Why so limiting? Do we really need walls limiting and keeping us away from more choice?
Only 31???
I thought Facebook has listed 54 or 56 gender identities??
So New York is twenty some short of the real number of recognized gender identities.
Does that mean that, per liberal criteria, they are bigoted against those identities which are omitted???
Having said that, I know I need to go to reeducation camp.
I can only think of a handful of identities.
Straight male
Straight female
gay male
gay female
bisexual either male or female
transsexual either male or female, either pre op or post op
How they get to 50 some identities? I just don’t see how you can have so many permutations. So off to reeducation camp I must go.............
Yeah, and Cruz was vicious attacked, by 'CONSERVATIVES,' for pointing this out.
...Similarly, someone who is gender fluid is a person whose gender identification and presentation shifts, whether within or outside of societal, gender-based expectations...
Gender Fluid will be the legal excuse that perverts use to go into women’s bathrooms, locker rooms, and shower areas to see naked women.
“I was gender fluid at the time I went into the bathroom full of pre pubescent girls”
Mr. niteowl77
We are living in some kind of pre-literate world of animal gods and magic.
It’s something. I can only think of Sodom.
Sick, sicker, sickest, weirdo, messed up, perv, pervette?
Accidentally. Translation: the first time you will not be fined. But don’t let it happen again. You have been warned. If there’s another complaint, your a$$ is gra$$ and you’ll pay.
Meanwhile, NYC is allowing public urination, without prosecution or fines.
These people are f&cking fascists.
Rules that are nearly impossible to understand, let alone follow, and six-figure fines for failing to follow...someone’s come up with quite a money-maker.
Must be the demons. People are largely given to dumb things, but this is on a professional level.
That's why smart ones avoid it.
Plus, there are plenty of people willing to do it for them for free.
And do you really think other big cities aren't moving in the same direction?
When shall we have a definitive list, and how can we keep the various categories properly identified?
They are fining people pretty heavily for using the wrong designation, you know.
This might turn out to be more lucrative for tort lawyers than even ADA cases.
Think of it, requiring some 57 different toilet facilities to cover all possible alternatives.
It is to boggle the mind.
All of their various definitions sound the same to me.
I’d like my gender identity to be ‘tax exempt.’
“...gender gifted”
Aren’t we all?
I consider myself to be exceptionally ‘gifted’....
;^)
Can I choose my gender identity when I apply for a contract with the city? At least where I live I’d get an advantage if I apply as a women owner and I bet NYC does it too. If I can choose my race also (which seems accepted by many) I’d have a double advantage.
