Congress votes to ban Confederate flags from VA cemeteries

Congress passed a proposal on Thursday that essentially bans Confederate flags from national cemeteries. With a 265-159 vote, the proposal makes it illegal to display the Confederate flag in Department of Veteran Affairs cemeteries – even on individual grave sites that honor soldiers who fought for the Confederacy, except on Memorial Day and Confederate Memorial Day.

Introduced by Rep. Jared Huffman (D) of California, the proposal received support from 84 Republicans and all but two Democrats. Rep. Sanford Bishop (D) of Georgia, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, voted against the amendment, while Representative Betty McCollum (D) of Minnesota voted "present."

Huffman's proposal was added as an amendment to the Veteran Affairs spending bill, and it remains uncertain whether it will become law....

Thanks, I was unaware of the distinction, I agree with your analysis of the motives of the flag ban agitators.

The little town I’m from in Michigan has an “old” cemetery where local Civil War vets are buried.

Several units of volunteers were recruited thereabouts; an artillery battery, a cavalry troop or two and a company of the 2nd US Sharpshooters.

The 2nd fought at Gettysburg, enfilading the Confederates from behind the stone wall connecting the Round Tops as they attacked up Little Round Top.

The town’s Carnegie Endowment library had a Civil War display in the basement museum featuring Civil War items, including a spectacle case that stopped a Minie ball from killing the owner.

When I was a boy Memorial Day observations were a Main Street parade to the Old Cemetery to decorate the graves, a speech by the mayor and a volley salute over them by the American Legion or VFW guys in their Ike jackets and overseas caps.

I marched in the parade with the Cub and Boy Scouts, in uniform as did everyone else, the high school band, the Brownies and Girl Scouts, the Vets organizations, Kiwanis, Eastern Star, the Masons...local car dealers provided convertibles for the vets too old to march..surprised there was anybody left to watch the parade.

That was in the late ‘60s, we also serenaded the Spanish-American and WW I vets at the local nursing home with patriotic songs for Veteran’s Day celebrations.

The country has changed so much since those days and not for the better either.

You left out a key portion of his writing: “That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends...”

There did not exist a form of government that was destructive to the ends of southern states in 1861 - unless you consider the southern states as self-destructive. The grotesqueness was on the part of the insurrectionists who made war upon their own nation..

Yeah, from a recent History Channel documentary on The Civil War that stated for all of Shermans supposed ‘’burnings and murders' all over the south his army was never near any of the areas many Southerner claimed his was. Trace his route yourself and then cross check it with claims made by Southerners who claim his army burnt their great-grandaddys barn. Simple isn't it? Madame the North didn't didn't go to war to end slavery, it went to war to preserve the Union and won. The South went to war to preserve slavery and lost everything, didn't it? And on second thought I'm not going anywhere. I'll go toe to toe with you as long as you like. You Madame prevaricate all over the place.

I would be interested to know why a black congressman was against it.

Of the four Democrat Representatives from Georgia, he's the only one who could possibly be defeated at the polls.

As Teddy Roosevelt put it ‘’We have room for only one flag in America, not two’’. Your ancestor fought to establish a separate nation with an economy based on the use of slave labor. Which flag fly’s atop that memorial to the Marines of Iwo Jima in Washington D.C.? The Stars And Stripes or the Stars and Bars? I’m asking you to examine your conscience and look at what your CSA forebear was fighting for.

Ain’t going no where friend. Can’t answer the question? I’ve no truck with Southerners. Just Confederates. Confederates aren’t Americans.

The agreement to end The War Between The States specified that Confederate veterans would be treated as equals to Federal veterans. Included were pensions, burial benefits and associated honors -- which would include flying their flag at cemeteries where Confederate veterans are buried.

It was an honorable step toward binding the nation's wounds in the wake of a bloody war fought between brothers.

In all liklihood, Congress' craven action will fail to pass muster if tested in court.

The only thing that has ended with The Civil War is the shooting. Over one hundred and sixty years later and we’re still debating this sh!t. With a Marxist bastard in The White House and two more Marxist bastards trying to get in we’re still fighting the f**king Civil War! For God’s Sake!

Which flag do you stand for?

Do you care? Fact is, my people didn't arrive in the US until the 1870s, so I don't have an ancestral dog in this fight.

But it's the Democrats who keep stirring up this brouhaha. Nobody had any complaints about the Confederate flag...or bumper stickers...or mudflaps...or the General...or Robert E. Lee...or "Dixie"...until liberals chose to make them issues.

So, whose side are you on?

By the way, does citing a historical fact necessarily put me on either side? Or would you prefer not to know about the facts?

So far as the Marxists are concerned, I'd like to think that we conservatives can walk and chew gum at the same time...

The irony of it all is the Confederates were all Democrats. And my people were here long before 1870 and they shot the sh!t out of plenty of Rebs.

One of my wife's forebearers was the last surviving veteran of the Revolutionary War when he expired near Ash Grove, MO in 1866.

Interestingly, prior to the nearby Battle of Wilson's Creek, he was visited by units from both the Federal and Confederate forces involved. Both honored him with a nineteen-gun salute.

I think the story is illustrative of what was in the hearts of both sides: Love for their country.

I've lived in the Deep South and honestly don't know a single soul who is "still fighting the Civil War" or who supports slavery in any way. Sure, they complain about Yankees...but it's good natured.

Recall that one of the reasons the libs hate the South is because they describe it as "The Most Patriotic Part of America". Which, by many measures, it is.

In my humble opinion, your concerns are misplaced...

If they're objecting to this particular act of Congress, they're not "re-fighting the Civil War", they're objecting to a craven p.c.-inspired denial of a solemn promise.

The rest is bluster...and jerking Yankee's chain.

You have no idea who I am, and don’t know a thing about me, my life, my upbringing, my cultural roots, nor anything about where I stand on the issue we’ve been discussing.

You’ve proven that by your responses to the several salient points and bits of information I’ve imparted to you, so far.

I told you to walk away, because I’ve realized that you’re not actually conversing with me. You’re carrying on an argument with some nebulous opposition viewpoint in your mind. I’m not even part of the conversation.

You’re not interested in talking with me, but feel free to continue arguing with that specter in your mind.
