SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A German shepherd fell out her owner's truck and stayed five weeks on the highway median near Sacramento for the owner to return.
Officers received calls every day about the animal, but they weren't able to find her for over a month.
Last Saturday, authorities were finally able catch the dog, who has since been nicknamed "Freeway Frida."
I saw the x-ray of her leg. A very bad break. I hope it didn’t happen when she first hit the pavement and had to suffer with that for over a month.
She’s gorgeous.
Well a Belgian will grow out to be about 2/3ds the size of a Shepard and weigh in around 40/50lbs when full grown. I’m still up in the air (no pun intended) whether to get a Belgian or another Border Collie. I lost my girl last November after fourteen wonderful years together.
“And a Shepard is one of the most devoted dogs around. Im thinking of getting a Belgian Malinois which is a smaller version of a Shepard, very devoted.”
Our German shepherd rescue saves about 5-10 per year and we commonly refer to them as mallinuts and mallingators due to their high prey drive and endless energy. We adopt them out only to experienced shepherd owners.
The vet said in the video that it would likely have to be plated and there was some tendon damage, but that she’d be OK.
The reason I mentioned the Belgian is I read a story of a Belgian bomb dog who was wounded in Afghanistan and her handler died. The story (a novel) was written from the dogs perspective, like she was narrating what was going on in her life. She wound up being attached to a cop. It was a great story and I can’t remember the book title. I live in a vast forest area on the Olympic Peninsula, Washington. I do a lot of hiking and having such a dog as the Belgian would be a good thing. I’d have her trained by a specialist.
Beautiful.
I love German Shepherds more than anything else in this world.
There is a special place for you! I am on the board of the local humane society & some people are just unbelievable. People will come in & want to trade in their older dog for a puppy. Like you would do w/ a car! The young girls at the front desk talk about how times a day they want to leap over & absolutely pummel someone.
You’re a good man! All of our animals are strays or giveaways. Our oldest cat was less than a pound d when one of my old students found her in a Wal Mart parking lot & brought her to me in the middle of the day wrapped in a newborn blanket. I taught the rest of the day w/ her in my arm & took her home. 16 years later she is still a pistol ; )
People who abuse animals are psychopaths who deserve whatever awful things come their way.
Think about a black sable colored German shepherd, characteristic of eastern European lines. They have a high energy drive like BelMals but will have an off switch.
Our rescue does not do out of state adoptions but (Los Angeles) Westside GSR does and they should have a few that meet your needs.

Beckie and I have rescued horses,a pony, too many cats to count over the years, and dogs. Our Rottweiler and one of the German Shepherds were pound puppies,Sheldon the Rottie was a two time loser at the pound. He got adopted only to be brought back because he was too much for them to handle.I have to admit that he was a real handful the first few days but he’s quite the guy now.I don’t consider myself anything special.I just try to do what I can.
Get a Border Collie,by all means.I’ve had two in the past, smartest dogs on the planet.I’ve had German Shepherds that came close to being as smart but Border Collies are the Einsteins of the canine world.
My dog’s vet thinks I am either crazy or very devoted to all my boys and girls (7, was 8 but my Old Jackie died last December 30th), he says my dogs eat better, and get better healthcare than 98 % of the human race (including me).
Both he and his assistant think I am a crazy old man; that’s OK, my boys and girls think I am better than sliced bread.
Gorgeous dog. And she seems very sweet!
An absolutely beautiful animal. I actually think the coloring is even more beautiful than the G.S. If you get one, please post pictures.
My dogs are NOT PETS; they are FAMILY.
Exactly! We call our dogs our pup children! I think our human children are a little jealous.
Thank you for that information. I would think getting one as a puppy would be better since you can train it the way you want and there’d not be any ‘quirks’ that a mature BelMel might have.
I’m still vacillating between another Border Collie or the BelMel.
