Proud Poppa Alert, Part II
me ^ | 5/19/16 | lafroste

Some of you may remember my Proud Poppa Alert last week about my son. Well, The military made him re-take the ASVAB to verify that he didn't cheat on the one he took last week. He scored higher this time. He scored 147/150 on the GT and 149/150 on the mathematics.

He became a US Marine 2 hours ago.

I’m sure you are very proud. But I must correct you. He will become a Marine upon graduation from boot camp. The title must be earned. But congrats and Semper Fi!

I’m sure he will be a good Marine!

I see he hasn't gone yet...tell him to keep his mouth shut and his ears open and he will do fine...and the sand fleas will be bad in October...I can here my DI yelling to this day: "Let my bugs eat, you maggots are only here to feed them and they out rank you!" ...priceless

Sometimes FR needs to be more like Facebook - we need a big LIKE button for posts like this! Congrats and best wishes to your future Marine son!

Congratulations to your son.

My younger brother entered the Marines through NROTC, and spent his career in cryptography. He retired as a Lt. Col. He still lets everyone know he's a Marine.

During his tour in Vietnam, he had to stay "inside the wire," because of his crypto clearances. He said, to go outside the wire with those clearances you needed an armed helicopter escort, and who ever heard of an armed helicopter escort for a Major (his rank at the time).

Hope your son has a satisfying career.

Congratulations! When does he go to boot camp? Parris Island or San Diego?

Marines take the whole “earned, not given” thing pretty seriously.
My son went through MCRD near San Diego in the winter of 2014. He’s a corporal, now. Graduating boot camp was a BHAFD, and I was and am very proud of him, as you will be proud of your son.
Keep us posted.

You better read up on boot camp and Parris Island, fast.

Of my son’s friends, the 5th one who went to USMC had the “easiest” (not that it is ever easy) time with boot camp, due to he was the recipient of all of the advice the other 4 had to offer. This was very helpful in his success at boot camp, as well as his future in the USMC. So, my free advice would be for him to interview at least several fairly new/young Marines about their experiences. If nothing else, it may keep him from being surprised by some elements of the training and experience.

You must be so proud!

I don’t remember any test called ASVAB when I enlisted in the Navy just out of high school (1961), but I do remember taking some tests. I don’t remember the scores either, but I was offered the opportunity to apply for an officer candidate program, attending college while serving, so I must have scored OK. I said no thanks; I hadn’t liked school that well.

Mistake.

Congrats on your son’s performance and choices. His recruit training experience will make him a better man and those potential career area choices are highly selective. All military language training is done in CA at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey. You could go visit him there and put in a round of golf at Pebble Beach, assuming you golf, of course.

His GT score definitely qualifies him for officer training but that might be tough to get without a bachelor’s degree. A friend of my son chose another route through language skills/school and intel schools to get a warrant officer appointment in the Army after some enlisted time. I don’t know if the USMC still has warrants or if there is one in that career path.

I had to look up what “the reaper” was. It used to be “mount motherfu@ker”. (and I feel guilty to not just spell it out. PC must die)

You are lucky he’s going in October.

My son was there June-July and the heat was brutal.

We flew down from MA and I still remember weeping at the graduation.
