A key congressional committee voted last week to require young women to register for potentially compulsory military service, but the gender-equalizing reform threatens to make felons out of women who refused to participate.
Though prosecutions currently appear unlikely, men jailed for not registering with the Selective Service System and some former authorities who participated in the cases are concerned about criminalizing a large swath of the population.
Enforcement wasn’t always lax, and the law that may be applied to women allows for five-year prison sentences for "knowing and willful" non-registration with an equally long statute of limitations.
“It will inevitably lead to massive resistance, whether visible in the streets or women just blowing it off the way men have," says Edward Hasbrouck, prosecuted for not registering in the 1980s. "Congress is smoking crack if they think women can be forced to register."
Hasbrouck served more than four months in prison after catching the eye of an ambitious federal prosecutor, Robert Mueller, who went on to be FBI director. He originally received a suspended sentence, but recalls an unamused judge sending him to prison in late 1984 for doing peace activism to satisfy court-ordered community service....

Felons? Then they can’t vote!
I hear it’s also a crime to cross the border illegally, forge green cards, not pay taxes, etc. And i’ll help any young women in my family avoid that perverted cesspool that the military has become.

There hasn’t been a draft since 1973.
How about we make registration for the draft voluntary, but... you have to be registered in order to vote, or run for office, or apply for any form of government assistance?
The public service announcements I hear on the radio only talk about losing eligibility for student loans and gov’t jobs for not registering.
Women are too important to be drafted. A population can recover with losing a sizeable portion of young men, but women of child bearing age.
Then why did Mr. Obama get this ball rolling by allowing women in combat slots?
Maybe Congressmen and women should be drug tested. Maybe most of them are smoking Crack.
Draft dodging? They’ll just get pregnant. easy out in wartime.

I’m aware of that. Apparently you think registration and all the talk is just a parlor game. A blind man can see that there is a clear trend line here leading to a resumption of a draft/community service requirement.
It is a steady move in that direction.

I had just finished two enlistments when I registered, since I was born 35 days after the deadline.

Great idea. Problem is, we can't even enforce citizenship, how can we do so regarding draft registration?
Its not that hard to fill out a little card. I did.
Yuppers. And most of the women in the military have done just that.
