Welcome to Our Post-Literate Political Culture
By Ian Tuttle March 24, 2016
Donald Trumps decision not only to threaten Ted Cruzs wife but, now, to double down and mock her is the most loathsome moment yet in a campaign characterized by vulgarity and bullying. About Trumps penchant for bullying I wrote yesterday.
But about his misogyny, an additional thought. The caption to Trumps repulsive retweet reads A picture is worth 1000 words, which is generally a stupid thing people say to excuse themselves from the hard work of plumbing their mind for words. In reality, the pictures of Mrs. Trump and Mrs. Cruz reveal nothing.
But, naturally, Trump thinks they do, because Trump works almost exclusively in the realm of images.
Consider Trumps liberal use of the word beautiful. His wife is beautiful, and his daughter. But so are his hotels. So are American tax dollars, Trump campaign t-shirts, and standing ovations. So are his websites, and the door hes going to build into the wall (also beautiful) that he is going to erect between the U.S. and Mexico. So is air.
None of those things is beautiful (and describing tax dollars as beautiful is borderline certifiable). But Trump calls them beautiful, because hes all about appearances. The determinative factor is how things look. Its the category in which he thinks. As he told Esquire in 1991: You know, it doesnt really matter what [the media] write, as long as youve got a young and beautiful piece of ass. (snip)
It doesnt matter as long as everyone sees that youve got a young and beautiful piece of ass. Trump does not care about actual elegance, class, or beauty, which require cultivation to be able to discern. (His various construction projects are evidence enough of this. The Taj Mahal is beautiful.

This forum is almost indistinguishable from DU. All the leftest twaddle against the front runner is exactly the same.
Cram that.
Replace Trump with Cruz and you got it right. Cruz is a pug-ugly, loathsome and corrupt puke.
Cram that lol- k bud- whatever- It wasn’t me making those statements about women- it was your candidate- your anger is directed in the wrong direction
The Yellow Kid points the way to yellow journalism...
Geez. I hope young Ian didn’t get spittle all over his computer screen before his head exploded...
Less than flattering is a profound understatement. In the first two sentences utter disgust of Trump was spilling out of my monitor onto my desk.
It is hard to take people seriously when they accuse Trump of being a bully between the breaths that they launch vile hatred at him.
Never underestimate a con man/salesman. The Nationa Enquirer article on Cruz should delight the Trump people and be retaliation for the offense of an anti Trump PAC running reprints of published photos of Trump’s wife that were pubically and legally available.
William Randolph Hearst would be PROUD of the "yellow press" tradition being carried on by NRO. :)
Cro-Manhattan misogynist Trump has been honest about his lowest-common-denominator leadership style, reality-show persona.. we’ll see ifwe really are Idiocracy soon.
What aspect of Trumps success makes you most envious, Steelie?
NeanderTrump is herding his women slaves on FR worse than I would ever have imagined.
Trump was the one who, in 1991, referred to his own wife as a “piece of ass” in an Esquire interview.
The National Review author, Ian Tuttle, is referencing Trump’s quote.
Cute, but stupid. I will spot you 40 percentage points and bet you my conservativeness and IQ are still higher than yours
Well, you lost that bet, unless you're Marilyn vos Savant. :)
I realize you fancy yourself some political guru or something. I just have to ask, how is Cruz this years standard ‘conservative’ when ALL the amnesty freaks are lining up behind him? How do you guys continue to spin this reality and come out the other end?
Biggest hypocrites are those who STILL want to believe lying Teddy is working for YOU.
Are we sure he wasn't simply addressing her foreignness, and her subsequent complete and total welcome into the Trump family and also the U.S.A. itself?
"(She is) a young and beautiful piece of us."
See? I bet that's what it was.
Yes, Heidi is attractive too..
