Very true. When we complain that China is manipulating it's currency its because they're keeping it unnaturally weak, not strong.

Speaking of good debates I found this debate between Andy Schlafly and Dr. Michael Farris on Convention of States to be a rather interesting debate. I found both to have compelling arguments for and against having a Convention of States. It lasts an hour and 35 minutes, but it went by rather fast, at least to me.

Even in Prescott Bush's day, Republicans felt uneasy about Kennedy's tariff reductions.
I'm not saying protective tariff walls are a good thing, but there's much to be said for encouraging American industry.

The Tariff

Did I blame unions? But a lot of companies that leave the country are unionized.
What people don't think through with regard to tariffs is the unseen consequence of their actions. They see the good part: More steel worker jobs. That part works and it is beneficial - to steel workers.
What they don't see is that it is not beneficial to auto makers who now pay more for their steel, sell fewer cars and layoff workers.
Is there a net good here? Perhaps. Perhaps not. Fewer cars are sold. That affects you and me.
The other factors that are not really considered are:
What products should have a tariff applied?
How high should that tariff be in percent?
Those are hard questions that you are willing to entrust to politicians. Not me. They will favor their friends and their pocketbooks just like they always do. They can be bought. They can be bribed. And they will be.
So, if you think tariffs are a good idea, take out a pen and start writing down a list of products that should have tariffs, those that shouldn't and the amounts to apply. Not an easy job. When you are done ask yourself how much better or worse off you will be. Unless you are a steel worker or other benefited person you will be worse off.
Yes, as I said most large companies are infected with union labor.
