Protectionism: Officially, the Republican Party is pro-free trade. But it has done a remarkably bad job of explaining the benefits of trade to its rank and file, as exit polls of primary voters depressingly show.

Well perhaps devaluation is the wrong word to use, erosion is probably more correct.

Sorry, not trying to be pedantic.

In some instances, when your currency is too strong, it is a good thing to devalue your currency.

Very true. When we complain that China is manipulating it's currency its because they're keeping it unnaturally weak, not strong.

No I'm man enough to recognize when I misspeak, so no need to apologize. In fact it makes me a better person and a better debater in the process. I always enjoy a good debate, even when I lose. Though of course I prefer the wins, LOL.

Speaking of good debates I found this debate between Andy Schlafly and Dr. Michael Farris on Convention of States to be a rather interesting debate. I found both to have compelling arguments for and against having a Convention of States. It lasts an hour and 35 minutes, but it went by rather fast, at least to me.

Funny, I was following your back and forth on that other thread yesterday but didn't have time to weigh in. I'll comment there rather than hijacking this one.

My standard of living is enhanced by low priced imports.

Cheaper now that's laughable. I am still waiting for Carrier Corporation to announce across the board price decreases now that their product line is made in Mexico and labor is so much cheaper. /sarcasm

Less than 7% of the US workforce is in a union. Unions are dead.

Lest see China has very restricted markets and high duties and tariffs and are becoming richer by the day. Could be a connection.

Per Capita GDP in China is a bit over $6800. The Per Capita GDP in the US is a bit over $53,000. Take your pick.

How's that Tariff working out for you China?

When did they become the free trade party?

Even in Prescott Bush's day, Republicans felt uneasy about Kennedy's tariff reductions.

I'm not saying protective tariff walls are a good thing, but there's much to be said for encouraging American industry.

Tariffs were used as a revenue source.

Tariff Act of 1789

Whereas it is necessary for that support of government, for the discharge of the debts of the United States, and the encouragement and protection of manufactures, that duties be laid on goods, wares and merchandise:"

Consider where they were 40 years ago.

Ask them about trade policy 40 years from now.

Republican Platform of 1924

The Tariff

We reaffirm our belief in the protective tariff to extend needed protection to our productive industries. We believe in protection as a national policy, with due and equal regard to all sections and to all classes. It is only by adherence to such a policy that the well being of the consumers can be safeguarded that there can be assured to American agriculture, to American labor and to American manufacturers a return to perpetrate American standards of life. A protective tariff is designed to support the high American economic level of life for the average family and to prevent a lowering to the levels of economic life prevailing in other lands.

In the history of the nation the protective tariff system has ever justified itself by restoring confidence, promoting industrial activity and employment, enormously increasing our purchasing power and bringing increased prosperity to all our people.

Did I blame unions? But a lot of companies that leave the country are unionized.

I won't contest your history lesson and the Tariff Act of 1789. I'm sure you have your facts straight. But the fact that Congress passed Tariffs doesn't equate to it being a good idea. Members of Congress do a lot of really stupid things. I offer as absolute, indisputable proof: The U.S. Congress of 2016.

What people don't think through with regard to tariffs is the unseen consequence of their actions. They see the good part: More steel worker jobs. That part works and it is beneficial - to steel workers.

What they don't see is that it is not beneficial to auto makers who now pay more for their steel, sell fewer cars and layoff workers.

Is there a net good here? Perhaps. Perhaps not. Fewer cars are sold. That affects you and me.

The other factors that are not really considered are:
What products should have a tariff applied?
How high should that tariff be in percent?

Those are hard questions that you are willing to entrust to politicians. Not me. They will favor their friends and their pocketbooks just like they always do. They can be bought. They can be bribed. And they will be.

So, if you think tariffs are a good idea, take out a pen and start writing down a list of products that should have tariffs, those that shouldn't and the amounts to apply. Not an easy job. When you are done ask yourself how much better or worse off you will be. Unless you are a steel worker or other benefited person you will be worse off.

Yes, as I said most large companies are infected with union labor.
