Protectionism: Officially, the Republican Party is pro-free trade. But it has done a remarkably bad job of explaining the benefits of trade to its rank and file, as exit polls of primary voters depressingly show.

I think what you are seeing here is the intrusion of reality on abstract theory. It’s not even that, so much, as creeping awareness of some sort of weird relativism which has overtaken our language where politicians and buzzwords are concerned.
YouTube: Milton Friedman on Free Trade"
Advice to Freepers: Milton Friedman knew more about Trade and Trade Policy than the sum total of Freeper Knowledge on the subject. Ignore his advice at your peril.
That's a crappy deal.
When did the GOP become the party that punishes people who have played by the rules their entire lives?
Answer me that you forum spamming troll jackass.
Since that video was recorded we have done exactly that? Where has it gotten us?
What's the definition of insanity?
Post and run and hide. You won’t defend pimping this screed. Suck it. .
“Free trade is the tool to redistribute Americas wealth to 3rd world countries.”
‘Fair trade’ is the tool to redistribute American wealth from hard working Americans who buy consumer goods to others who make them.
They are not. They are the anti Managed Trade party. Free Trade is completely different then what we have now
Sad to say your understanding of theory is top notch, your understand of current trade policy, unfortunately, is nonexistent. We don’t have Free Trade, we have Managed Trade
“Yikes. The Free Republic Trumpster Protectionist Subcommittee is meeting again today. Sad to say. So it is time for yet another Milton Friedman Two Minute Free Trade Video Lesson :”
Nice video. Friedman says the dollars we spend on imports ‘will come back to the US’.
How are they coming back?
When Donald Trump became its runaway leader for the POTUS nomination.
Don’t some questions just answer themselves?
History proves Milton Friedman’s statements incorrect. The USA was once the greatest manufacturing country in the world. American isolationism and protectionism made it as such.
Furthermore, Milton Friedman’s beginning scenario of 3 men in a boat and one shooting holes in it is a globalist view of trade and the economy. A more realistic view is 3 men are in 3 separate boats and two of the men are shooting holes in the one guys boat.
The author is right on theory, but he fails to hold the GOP accountable for the cronyist execution.
GOP should have ALWAYS been Pro-American!
That happened when American workers figured out that free trade allowed businesses to move their operations out of the country to get lower wage workers and lower taxes and leaving American workers without jobs and then those same businesses exporting their product back into the country to the American consumer. That's when a$$hole.
Free trade is free trade with both sides trade freely...
free trade is not one side has a protected market and the other side is an open Dumping Ground
If American factories could employ minors and work all employees ten hours a day in factories free to discharge their waste into nearby streams or unfiltered into the air, those US factories would be in equitable circumstances with their turd world competitors. Appropriate tariffs would allocate the impact of US sensibilities onto foreign manufactured goods. At that point we would have free trade.
Free Trade is not FAIR TRADE.
“The left uses high taxes and regulations to drive companies to move their manufacturing to other countries.”
This is incorrect. It is cheap labor. Nothing more.
When their job went overseas.
