I think what you are seeing here is the intrusion of reality on abstract theory. It’s not even that, so much, as creeping awareness of some sort of weird relativism which has overtaken our language where politicians and buzzwords are concerned.

“Free trade is the tool to redistribute Americas wealth to 3rd world countries.”

‘Fair trade’ is the tool to redistribute American wealth from hard working Americans who buy consumer goods to others who make them.

Sad to say your understanding of theory is top notch, your understand of current trade policy, unfortunately, is nonexistent. We don’t have Free Trade, we have Managed Trade

Nice video. Friedman says the dollars we spend on imports ‘will come back to the US’.

How are they coming back?

History proves Milton Friedman’s statements incorrect. The USA was once the greatest manufacturing country in the world. American isolationism and protectionism made it as such.

Furthermore, Milton Friedman’s beginning scenario of 3 men in a boat and one shooting holes in it is a globalist view of trade and the economy. A more realistic view is 3 men are in 3 separate boats and two of the men are shooting holes in the one guys boat.

When Did The GOP Become The Anti-Free Trade Party?

That happened when American workers figured out that free trade allowed businesses to move their operations out of the country to get lower wage workers and lower taxes and leaving American workers without jobs and then those same businesses exporting their product back into the country to the American consumer. That's when a$$hole.

Free trade is a good thing, but what many in the GOPe advocate is NOT free trade. When you erect wage and employee protections and mandates in-country, sending those jobs overseas where NONE of those requirements is obtained is not smart. When you erect environmental laws that include protections for air and water discharge in-country, sending those factories overseas where NONE of those expensive requirements is met is not smart.

If American factories could employ minors and work all employees ten hours a day in factories free to discharge their waste into nearby streams or unfiltered into the air, those US factories would be in equitable circumstances with their turd world competitors. Appropriate tariffs would allocate the impact of US sensibilities onto foreign manufactured goods. At that point we would have free trade.

“The left uses high taxes and regulations to drive companies to move their manufacturing to other countries.”

This is incorrect. It is cheap labor. Nothing more.
