After spending the last few days soaking up as much as possible on the Apple-FBI San Bernardino iPhone spat, the evidence -- in my eyes -- has become crystal clear. Apple's planted itself on the wrong side of history here for numerous reasons, and is using nothing less than a finely scripted legalese tango in defending its ulterior motives.
As a part time, somewhat auxiliary member of the tech media at large, I'm a bit embarrassed at how poorly this story has been covered by my very own colleagues. Many of those who should undeniably have a more nuanced, intricate understanding of the technical tenets being argued here have spent the last week pollinating the internet with talking point, knee-jerk reaction.

There is no way that the Chinese will allow Apple to sell a phone that is unbreakable. What happens if the state of NY says providers in NY cannot sell unbreakable? Why should criminals or politicians like Hillary be allowed to have unbreakable devices?
Fine with me. They have to have a court order stating probable cause to get them to open up a phone.
That’s how it is SUPPOSED to work.
And if you really think Apple can’t already do this, you are terribly naive.
The FBI tells the County to reset the password, then whines when the phone is screwed up. Then they sue Apple to clean up their mess? I say “screw them.” All they want is to be able to get into everybody’s iPhones. They’ve been trying this crap with Apple’s security systems for years.
The FBI says they need to crack the phone so they can figure out what happened during the 18 minutes between the shooting and the couple being stopped and executed while wandering the area in a rented vehicle.
They know what happened during that time. They just don't want us to know. Ergo the charade over the phone.
Thanks weird. According to the court order the FBI ADMITTED that Apple does NOT have the software developed at this time to defeat the security/encryption system of the newer Apple communication devices. The court order specifically requests/orders that Apple CREATE software for the defeat of their security system. In order to hack into this one phone, Apple would be creating software that could hack into ALL newer Apple devices. In essence creating a ‘bug’ in their system. Not something you’d want to do if your attempting to sell communications devices based on ‘absolute security’.
That should be ‘That’s weird’.....
I looked at the Apple Spec on how the execute encryption.
MacAffe has zero chance of getting in.
Tell the government to take a long walk off a short pier. This is all BS. This current government is one of the most corrupt ever.
True enough.... Apple might never admit to it, and they might well lie and say it’s impossible to do, but I’ll bet my next paycheck that they CAN do it, and more than likely already have a way to do it.
BINGO!
I really don't understand what is going on here - crimes have been committed, a court order has been issued to open the phone to determine if relevant information is available - not all phones or any other phone - just that phone - isn't that how criminal justice is achieved?
Seems to me that law enforcement needs this tool - only under court order - so, what's the big deal?
“Apple should break open this phone, but NOT give the key to the feds.”
Asking out of ignorance; what is the difference between jail-breaking an I-phone and unlocking the back door of an I-phone? Kids perform this jail break trick all the time....
Supposedly they already did that 70 times. What's so special about this phone, just because it was used by an actual ISIS terrorist instead of some white old man who amassed "too many" legally owned firearms and attends church?
Limbaugh stated something startling today. The owner of the phone is not the terrorist but the local county government for whom the terrorist worked. Limbaugh stated that the county has the legal authority to authorize Apple to hack the phone. There is one even better. The county has access to software provided by Apple that would allow the county to get into the phone and give all the data to the FBI.
The big question is why the county does not use the software and get into the phone?
Not likely. The first such demand would set the precedent Apple is trying to avoid here.
Once they do this, law enforcement here and abroad will be inundating them with iPhones to break. Eventually they may be so overwhelmed by the quantity that they’ll feel compelled to give the FBI the software they want just to make it go away.
Because what the FBI is requesting is something Communist countries do and not the USA.
The firmware of every iOS device is signed by a digital encryption key only provided by Apple. They are being asked to write what amounts to malware and digitally sign it as legit. Once they do that you have NO idea if the version of iOS you are running on your device is 100% valid or not. It could have came from Apple, it could have came from the FBI, it could have come from Russian or China, or even your 17 year old next door computer hacker kid. Once they create this the genie is out of the bottle and its all over.
They have NEVER been asked to write a SIGEND copy of iOS that circumvents their security features until now for any phone.
He’s claiming he’ll use social engineering to do it. He’s only going to get ten tries, the odds aren’t good.
Limbaugh is 100% clueless. The county DOES NOT have software that can allow them to get onto that phone. The software doesn’t exist. That is exactly what Apple is being asked to create by the FBI.
