The proposed major military assault into Syria holds considerable risk for Turkey, not the least of that being a possible accidental escalation of hostilities with Russia, but it now seems unavoidable if Ankara is not to see a major disaster, not only wasting more than five years of intense effort to overthrow the Syrian Gov-ernment of President Bashar al-Assad, but also to avert the unfettered escalation of the Kurdish war to wrench a large part of Turkey away from Ankara to create a new Kurdish state which would link with Iraqi and Syrian Kurds. Already, Turkey has paid an enormous price in unanticipated consequences from its ef-fort to lead a coalition (Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the U.S.) into overthrowing Assad.
The war has taken far longer than anticipated, and has cost Turkey all of its regional allies; it has also unit-ed the Kurds of Turkey, Iraq, and Syria into a desire to finally create their Kurdish state; it has generated a refugee flow from Syria and Iraq which is now beyond Ankara’s capacity to manage; and it has created a major rift between Turkey and the European Union, while costing Turkey most of its political support in Washington (except from the Obama White House and the State Dept.). Moreover, the escalation has led to the Russo-Turkish rift, in which Russian sanctions against Turkey are now starting to bite into an already fragile Turkish economy.

I kind of agree with that. Too many look at situations thru their media or political biased lens. But that’s what propaganda and misinformation is all about. To make the public into lemmings to justify bad behavior.
I’ve become too jaded and cynical of our leaders to believe these situations and relationships are ever about what we’ve been told. I don’t know for certain but my guess is Victoria Nuland and Obama created the new cold war over Ukraine with Putin for some self serving reason. Hxll our Congress can’t even write a bill that doesn’t have some BS name that means just the opposite of what it does.
My motto is end our costly entangling relationships and make our country great again.
Well, I take a more U.S. position than you. I hope that the Kurds prevail against the Turks. But if Turkey and Russia go at it, I hope they crush each other, or Russia gets crushed.
Russia is not fighting ISIS, by the way, they are only fighting the rebels who are against Iran's pet Assad. They don't care about ISIS or saving Christians.
But geopolitics is real, and a vast part of Syria is a no man's land causing chaos. I certainly wouldn't want Turkey tell the U.S. we can't defend our border, so I couldn't in all honsety say it's illegitmate for Turkey to defend their border. And going into former Syrian territory could be a legitimate necessity for that.
But all of this is moot, since Turkey and Russia will not go to wat. They both have to much economically to lose. They are still allies, even if there is tension right now. Russia despearately needs to sell them oil, and Turkey needs that oil.

Well, I have many criticisms of Turkey, but that is ridiculous. Syria collapsed because of the rebellion against Assad. (Which the U.S. supported) A huge portion of Syria is a chaos zone, and sinc it border's Turkey, it effects the greatly. Personally, I wish there was a Kurdistan. But I can't seriosuly claim that Turkey doesn't have an interest in preventing that from happening, or being concerned about the chaos in Syria.
As far as invasions, Russia was invited by the only legitimate (however nasty it is) government of Syria.
Good for them. But they still have to suffer the consequences of sticking their neck out.
