Adblock Plus and (a little) more
Adblock Plus ^ | 2015-12-16 15:35 | Job Plas

Several years ago, we started to offer Acceptable Ads as a feature in Adblock Plus as a middle way between ad blocking users who opted out of traditional ad formats, while allowing publishers and content-creators to continue to monetize with unobtrusive ads. This first version allowed users to whitelist individual websites that they wanted to support. In 2011, we published a set of guidelines that our user community deemed “acceptable,” and these acceptable ads are shown by default to our users to allow a compromise between blocking all ads, or no ads at all. Since then, we have thought about Acceptable Ads a ton and collected feedback from multiple sources, but the aim has never changed: we are trying to safeguard the user experience of Adblock Plus by only allowing nonintrusive ad formats, while enabling content-creators and others to monetize.

Today, we are announcing updates to the Acceptable Ads criteria while keeping the core values. The idea is to make Acceptable Ads easier to understand, even if you don’t have a background in ads, while providing a perfect starting point for the Acceptable Ads Committee which will take over in 2016. Finally, transparency is critical for us so we are releasing more public information on how we monetize with Acceptable Ads.

I recently switched to uBlock Origin. I like it.

It is supposed to use fewer resources than AdBlock Plus.

Opera does not show anything with that name. I also was not aware that AdBlock Plus used all that many resources to begin with, but good luck with your choice.

Cheers.

Been using Adblock, love it, and I see no ads. I don’t buy impulse online, and never anything from any annoying ad that appeared before Adblock. Helps keep my BP down...

Adblock is the only way to visit Breitbart and actually read an article.

It uses huge resources and I had to remove it and replace with uBlock Origin on all of our older laptops -- both Windows and Linux. Resources used by uBlock are negligible and works well.

Right, then, when the developer posts a version for Opera I’ll try it out and see if it makes a difference on some of these machines. If so, I’ll let others know.

Especially the ‘doze customers I support. :p *grin*

Always fun to use someone else’s computer, you get to see what you’re missing running Adblock!

Dunno about Breitbart since I’ve been running AdBlock Plus for years, but apparently there are several other websites that are overflowing with adverts that cause no end of frustrations for would-be viewers. I think Onyx was the latest FReeperette that I recommended it to, along with Ghostery.

I know that I see very few ads indeed whenever I go online now and it is very gratifying indeed. The worst ones were the ones where I was attempting to view some online vids and the popup ads were horrendous. Once I installed those two I was truly amazed at how fast the pages loaded and ran. :)

Now that I’m reminded; don’t forget to contribute! FreeRepublic would not exist without the generous support of its loyal donors. :)

P.S. Anyone know why the automatic spellchecker keeps saying that FreeRepublic (and the word “spellchecker”, ironically) is misspelled?

I also was not aware that AdBlock Plus used all that many resources to begin with

One of the features of AB+ was the ability to add pictures you wanted to block. Very handy on some forums where people have nasty avatars. But over time, it killed the browser speed.

It was a nice feature (not available in Ublock Orgin). But comparing the two, I also ended up going with Ublock over AB+... The other program I use to use was Adblock Edge. It was a nice product that didn't have the white lists that AB+ sold out to, but Ublock to me was faster than it too.

Run what works for you of course. But yeah, Ublock to me was the faster choice.

I couldn’t agree more. Without Ad block Plus, the constant popup adds and scrolling literally shut down the browser. They should limit their adds. This excessive adds seem to be a hallmark of most right wing sights.
Obviously I am not a Communist, but for the love of God when you so inundate your reader base with adds they can’t read your article. What is the point?

uBlock Origin... is supposed to use fewer resources than AdBlock Plus.

For me, the performance difference was obvious. uBlock Origin is faster to load and faster overall.
