In Operations Research this is known as the Traveling Salesman problem: find the shortest route that connects a list of cities. Check it out on Wikipedia, which has an excellent short article on it. Several solutions are known, but it is one of the most difficult problems in Operations Research.
I drove in all 48 contiguous before 30, but had to wait until 35 for Hawaii and 49 for Alaska. Grew up in Seattle, college in NY, significant time in Atlanta, Denver and San Diego.
I’ve been on an interstate in Hawaii and I-4 across Florida (only) My favorite roads.
Even less, considering how close the horizon actually is to any point on Earth. :’)

The night I drove into Tucumcari to find a hotel was the very first time I realized what that part of the song was about. :') The hotel was, I guess, a former apartment complex, as the units were definitely like apartments. There was a nice courtyard sporting fossil tree stumps. Wish I'd had more time.
