When 30 carbine was introduced during WW2, many called it inadequate. It became massively popular, and not just with the rear echelon troops. Far from the sheer power of the 30-06, it was more useful to a radio operator, a cook, or a typist. Likewise, 22WMR is nowhere near the power of 223Rem (already deemed inadequate by many), yet its ballistic cousins 5.7x28 and 4.6x30 are well regarded for certain niche uses. Until recently, 22WMR was mostly used in hunting guns, the occasional exception like Grendel carbine aside. But consider it in the Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) format: lightweight, accurate, nearly recoilless, and effective.
For the test, I used two CMR30's updated to the production configuration. Both were reliable and well received by the numerous shooters who tried them. While slow fire provides about 1.5MOA dispersion, we did rapid fire standing at 18-20 yards. The target was a 1/4" hardened aluminum, diamond plate backed, with 2x4s. 9mm +P and .357Mag defensive ammunition shot through 4" barrels left minimal impression on the plate. 22LR let just a tiny splatter. From the carbine barrel, 22WMR ball blew through the metal and the wood behind it. We tried CCI hollow point load with the same result.

OK.But a model 19 is still a potent weapon.
The old myth was probably based on .45 ball vs 9mm ball from the military. There I can see a difference, but a 9mm +p jhp does a pretty good job.
I never had a Water oak tree break into my house
It’s very hard to beat a “Garand” !
.38 Airtight is no fun to fire...

I use Hornady FTX Critical Defense.
Wanna see how tough your White Oak bark is?
.380 is good first line defense. A small pistol in your pocket beats the big one out in your truck.
Ruger SR 22 is superior tot he Walther P99. BUT one of my personal carry tools is the Taurus 941 in 2 inch, eight rounds, with ammo strips for reloading. Accurate out to twenty yards, with deadly effect in cranial and pelvic hits.
Correction:Air weight.
Look at the Ruger 327 Federal Magnum.
“No idea. I don’t do wheel guns. They are a 19th century anachronism.”
Jerry Miculek seems to have fun with revolvers.

Of course, he can shoot semi-autos as well.

I was given a Universal which needed a bolt job. After putting an Iver Johnson heat treated bolt and parts in it, it shoots like a dream and have never had a jam or miss-feed in the four hundred plus rounds I’ve put through it. Takes GI mags and eats any 30 cal ammo I feed it (from Privi, or Remington, or IMI, etc.). 110 gr ball ammo for range, soft lead head hollow points for home defense.
Quarter inch aluminum,,,
When I moved into my first apartment, first job and money was tight I had a Colt Frontier Scout my grandpa had given me. It has a .22lr & .22mag cylinder which were easily changed out. I popped in the .22 mag and loaded up hollow points, it stayed in my night stand and I felt protected, having shot this piece several times I knew how it handled and what to expect. A .22 mag in hand is better than nothing.
Shot placement is everything.
Responding so this goes to my pings, thanks!
“For stopping effect, they wanted either the .40 or the .45, for what they called “Spin Around Effect”.”
There is simply no such thing. That’s the myth. In the big picture view a typical 9mm and a 45 are so close that its not even funny. The energy and velocity differ only slightly, and certainly not enough to make the slightest difference in how a shot person responds.
And a 45 doesn’t even come close to the energy needed to spin a human body around.
The only question is accuracy and how many rounds you want on board.
Jim Cirillo told a story about someone shooting a Dik Dik in an African camp for pot meat. Twice with a 45 and the Dik Dik just stood there munching grass. Finally after it was dead they looked and there were two nice 45 hits right where he aimed.
His friend asked how could this be? The answer, “I guess he’s never read Col. Coopers book”.
Many 45 shot people never read the book either.
Yep, strap on my 45 too, but unless its cold, they are too hard to hide. Whereas a lil 380 is always in my pocket. Up close in a store, an incident will be very up close. Double taping 380 up close will give time to go get the cannon.
LOL. I can't imagine trying to fire 30.06 rounds out of a full auto carbine. (at least without a mount). I know I wouldn't want to be within a mile in any direction of the guy trying to do it.
Carbines were .30 cal. The garand is a 30’06 rifle. My uncle in Korea carried an M1 carbine that was full auto. He was in the 24th division and saw heavy fighting in the summer of 1950 being the first unit thrown into the fight. He liked the M1 Carbine.
If I were going to go .30 cal carbine ammo wise I would get the 110 grain hollow point round way better than ball fmj. And expect to pay more for a .30 cal shooter, especially if you go M1 carbine route.
