Historically, the President of the United States wears the epithet of “leader of the free world.â€
Obama, in his presidency has relinquished that role almost gleefully. As a result, the world is a far more dangerous place.
Charles Crawford, former British ambassador to Sarajavo, Belgrade and Warsaw, said in an article in PunditWire on 16 June, 2013, that Obama’s Cairo speech “set the stage for Egypt’s disaster,†meaning the overthrow of President Mubarak and the election of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Obama’s response to his critics:

I'm wondering if I am correct in feeling that the word 'epithet' is moving into the same territory as infamous as a denigratory word? Of course my using correct English for 'denigratory' would probably already put me in 'deep dutch' ... oops, I keep digging deeper don't I?
Still generically (pedantically) I would prefer the synonym of "appellation" as a non-value synonym, However to say that Obama is now infamous for his shirking of the appellation of "leader of the free world" would justify your usage of 'epithet' if it refers to the odium that is Obama!
